Sam Ersson leaves the match with a possible injury

Midway through the first period Saturday afternoon against the Boston Bruins, the Philadelphia Flyers suffered possibly the one thing that absolutely cannot happen: an injury to goaltender Sam Ersson.

The 25-year-old netminder left the game during a television timeout as we saw Aleksei Kolosov warming up on the ice and the younger goalkeeper taking his place between the pipes. Ersson walked through the tunnel, but it didn’t seem so obvious.

As the tweet notes, just minutes earlier while saving a tough shot from a Boston Bruin, Ersson’s right skate blade came off and he quickly waved to his bench to get someone there to replace his blade as quickly as possible. That happened. A trainer came out, pushed a new and fresh blade into Ersson’s skate and the game continued.

But when we noticed after that break that Kolosov was warming up, it seemed more serious than expected. Ersson points to his feet and shrugs as he walks to the bench, and he certainly skated there under his own power and didn’t need any help.

At the time of writing this, we are still in the dark. It could just be a long-term equipment issue, but it certainly feels more likely that something was adjusted and he had to leave the game due to a possible injury. You’d think if it was just something with his equipment it would take less than a few minutes.

If Ersson is missing for an extended period of time, the Flyers are in trouble. As things stand now, an unproven Kolosov with less than four terms of NHL experience under his belt will be thrust into the starting role and the miscast, awkward netminder of Ivan Fedotov will be his backup. Well, in that scenario, we can already start looking at the top picks for the 2025 NHL Draft.

UPDATE:

So yes. It’s an injury that Ersson is dealing with and not just an equipment issue. We are doomed.

ANOTHER UPDATE:

Flyers general manager Danny Briere has officially announced that Ersson will not return to the game.
