San Juan Capistrano’s new skate park set to open next year – Orange County Register

San Juan Capistrano has selected a construction team to lead construction of the planned new skate park, which is expected to be completed in May.

The City Council unanimously approved a contract with CS Legacy Construction, the company that the city said had the lowest responsible bid for the skate park project, during its last meeting. According to a staff report, the company is behind other projects around San Juan Capistrano, including the Putuidem Village project and the Verdugo Street beautification project.

Construction on the skate park is expected to begin later this month, Assistant City Manager Matisse Reischl said, and will take about six months to complete.

The City Council also approved an additional $1.36 million for the project, bringing the total proposed funding to nearly $6.8 million, the report said.

The 1,850-square-meter skate park, which is set to be built on the corner of the municipal Kinoshita Farm site, has been in the works since 2017, but has encountered setbacks and delays.

The skate park is designed for beginner to intermediate levels and will be surrounded by a rustic pig wire fence that is not suitable for climbing, officials said. It will include other features including a seating area, playground, restrooms and a drinking fountain. Reischl said the design elements will pay homage to the farm’s grounds.

The skate park will be located near the community center and other sports fields. The city’s plans include a new multi-use walkway connecting Via Positiva to the skate park and Camino Del Avion.

Councilman John Taylor noted that the skate park was a “very, very long time coming” and said he had hoped his son would be able to use the skate park at one point. Now, Taylor said, he wants it ready for his grandchildren.

“I think it’s a very important day to award this contract,” Taylor said.

The city of Dana Point — the project is near the border between the cities — has agreed to contribute $25,000 annually toward the park’s maintenance once it is completed, Reischl said.
