After placing himself firmly in the NFL MVP race with 146 rushing yards and two touchdowns in the Philadelphia Eagles’ 26-18 win over the Washington Commanders on Thursday, Saquon Barkley is on track to earn extra money with incentives in his contract .

According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport and Mike Garafolo, Barkley’s deal includes a base salary of $13.5 million this season plus another $3 million in individual and team bonuses within reach.

Here’s a look at the incentives in Barkley’s deal:

  • $250,000 for 1,500 combined rushing and receiving yards
  • $250,000 for 2,000 combined rushing and receiving yards
  • $500,000 for All-Pro first team selection
  • $250,000 for All-Pro second team or Pro Bowl selection
  • $250,000 if the Eagles win the NFC Championship Game
  • $250,000 if the Eagles win the Super Bowl

Of these incentives, the 1,500 combined rushing and receiving yards seem like a lock. Barkley leads the NFL with 1,347 yards from scrimmage already with seven games remaining.

At his current pace of 134.7 scrimmage yards per game, Barkley could reach 1,500 yards within the next two games. The 2,000 meter incentive is also within reach.

Barkley is on pace for 2,290 yards from scrimmage if he plays all 17 games. That would be the 11th highest single-season total in NFL history.

Eagles general manager Howie Roseman broke from his usual team-building method by signing Barkley to a three-year, $37.8 million contract in free agency.

They spent the second-lowest amount on running backs and gained the third-most rushing yards over a six-season span from 2017 to ’22, according to Reuben Frank of NBC Sports Philadelphia.

Barkley has been one of the key driving forces pushing the Eagles to the top of the NFC East and in the mix for the No. 1 seed in the entire conference. He’s a safe bet to earn one of the two spots on the All-Pro team, and would likely be the favorite for the first team at this point.

Considering how well the Eagles are currently playing on both sides of the ball, it wouldn’t be a surprise if Barkley also earns one of two incentives for reaching the Super Bowl or winning the Super Bowl.

Philadelphia has won six straight games with an offense and defense that rank in the top seven in points per game.

The MVP is a very difficult award for anyone who is not a quarterback to win. Adrian Peterson was the last non-quarterback to be named MVP in 2012. Lamar Jackson is having another incredible season and looks set to win the award for the third time.

Barkley will get his chance to prove his MVP bonafides against Jackson when the Eagles and Baltimore Ravens play at M&T Bank Stadium on December 1.
