Saturday Night Live’s Bowen Yang and Chappell Roan hold hands after the controversial Moo Deng skit

Bowen Yang and Chappell Roan held hands at the end of the film Saturday evening livejust weeks after the comedian was criticized by her fans for apparently mocking her while dressed as pygmy hippo Moo Deng.

Hours earlier SNL aired the season 50 premiere on Saturday, September 28, Roan canceled two scheduled appearances at the All Things Go festival, telling her fans, “Things have gotten really overwhelming.”

In the broadcast, Yang comically combined Roan’s comments about fame and her desire for boundaries with the hippopotamus that lived at the Khao Kheow Open Zoo in Thailand and went viral on social media.

Dressed as Moo Deng, but referring to Roan’s comments, Yang continued to say SNL‘s Weekend Update segment: “For the past 10 weeks I’ve been busy non-stop. Running around, eating lettuce, trying to bite the water out of a hose, and the response was overwhelming.”

Referring to a statement Roan shared on social media, he added: “Reminder: Women don’t owe you anything. If I’m in my enclosure, tripping over things, biting my trainer’s knee, I’m working. That’s the project. Don’t shout my name and expect a photo just because I’m your parasocial best buddy or because you appreciate my talent.

Yang was criticized on social media for claiming he was mocking Roan, but the comedian dismissed that idea. On Instagram stories, Yang wrote: “Oh my gosh ‘mocks’? If my personal position and the piece aren’t entirely clear in terms of support (Roan), then so be it, I guess.

“Everything she’s ever asked for has been reasonable and even then we can connect it to another story about boundaries or whatever.”

Roan was the musical guest in last night’s episode of SNL (Nov. 2), and while she didn’t participate in any skits with Yang, the fact that they prominently held hands during the closing farewell seemed like a clear indication that there’s no bad blood between the pair.

Elsewhere in the episode, Kamala Harris joked about Donald Trump’s garbage truck problems when she made a surprise appearance at the cold open.

The vice president, who was played on the 50th season of Maya Rudolph’s comedy show, flew to New York City on Saturday evening after a campaign event in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Harris made the unscheduled stop while en route to Detroit, Michigan, where Air Force Two landed at LaGuardia Airport in Queens. It was the show’s final episode before Election Day on Tuesday.

She appeared in the show’s cold open opposite Rudolph’s version of her, as the actress looked in the mirror and said she wished she “could talk to someone who has been in my shoes.”

The camera then panned to the reflection in the mirror, where the beaming Vice President sat and received a huge cheer from the studio audience.
