Savencia Cheese is recalling 6 Brie cheeses

An American cheese company voluntarily recalled a select batch of aged cheeses, all Brie, this weekend due to potential listeria problems.

Six different types of Brie manufactured at a Savencia Cheese facility in the U.S. may be contaminated with listeria monocytogenes, a bacterium known to cause foodborne illness, according to a Saturday notice from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

The bacteria was identified in the manufacturing plant’s processing equipment after routine testing was conducted. The cheeses had “limited regional distribution” in select stories across the country, but the few retailers that did receive the products were in the process of pulling them from shelves.

According to the FDA, Aldi and Market Basket are among the select retailers affected by the Savencia Cheese recall. The affected states include Indiana, Missouri, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Texas, Iowa, New Jersey, California, Oregon, Colorado, Washington and Illinois.

“Consumers who have any of the recalled products listed in the table above should not consume it and return it to the place of purchase for a full refund,” the FDA said.

According to the FDA, there have been no confirmed reports of illness or death resulting from consumption of the recalled products. Savencia Cheese USA initiated the voluntary recall in hopes of recalling the potentially affected product, which has not yet been identified.

Savencia Cheese USA did not immediately respond to USA TODAY’s request for details on regions and locations affected by the voluntary recall.

Savencia Cheese name, best before date

The best way to check whether or not the Brie you purchased has been voluntarily recalled is to check the expiration date and the UPC or universal product codes for each product. All recalled Brie cheeses have a best buy date of December 24, 2024, but the UPC varies by product.

Symptoms of listeria poisoning or listeriosis

Listeria, or listeriosis, is a serious bacterial infection caused by eating foods or foods contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes. The foodborne bacterial illness usually affects immunocompromised young children, the elderly and pregnant people the hardest.

According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, an estimated 1,600 people contract listeriosis each year and an estimated 260 people die in the U.S. each year. The USDA warns higher-risk individuals who experience flu-like symptoms within two months of eating contaminated food to seek medical attention and tell the healthcare provider about eating the contaminated food.

Common symptoms include:

  • Fever
  • Muscle pain
  • Headache
  • Stiff neck
  • Confusion
  • Loss of balance
  • Convulsions
  • Diarrhea
  • Other gastrointestinal symptoms
  • Miscarriage, stillbirth, premature birth and/or life-threatening infection in newborn babies
  • Dead
