Schefter: Russell Wilson wants to ‘be somewhere’ against Broncos

With Russell Wilson re-injuring his calf during practice prior to the Pittsburgh Steelers’ Week 1 game against the Denver Broncos, the team turned to QB Justin Fields, and Fields led Pittsburgh to an 18-10 victory to open the season. With Week 2 against Wilson’s former team in the Denver Broncos coming up, ESPN’s Adam Schefter believes Wilson wants to play.

“I think when Russell gets healthy, he’ll come back and have a chance to be the starter again. But they played well yesterday, they did exactly what they were supposed to do. They didn’t score a touchdown, but they played well on defense, they ran the ball and they were opportunistic, and TJ Watt is a man-buster. So what’s interesting now is they’re playing Denver this week. Russell wants to be there,” Schefter said Monday on The Pat McAfee Show.

Fields did his job, he didn’t lose the ball and he used his legs well. But he also missed a couple of passes that he should have made, and the Steelers can go back to Wilson if he’s healthy. The question is whether he’s healthy. He felt like he was ready to play Sunday’s game, but the medical staff ruled him out.

With Wilson facing a lot of local and national media scrutiny after his failed stint in Denver, he may be looking to exact revenge on his former team and former head coach Sean Payton. If Wilson believes he is healthy enough to play, it is a game he does not want to miss, adding an extra layer for Mike Tomlin in deciding who plays.

If the medical staff doesn’t think Wilson is fit enough, the Steelers will either not let him play and risk further injury or let him play while limited. But if Wilson is cleared to play, playing against Denver will likely mean a little more to him than playing against the Falcons.

Considering the Broncos fired Wilson — and are paying the majority of his salary this season — after he underperformed during his tenure, history there should make for a storyline-filled matchup. Both teams should have a bit of a chip on their shoulder. Broncos LB Jonas Griffith said he “definitely” wanted to take Wilson, and Wilson will want to beat his former team and try to show the Broncos they made a mistake in moving on from him.

Tomlin will likely have more to say about the quarterback decision tomorrow, but there’s no doubt that Fields made it harder to get back at Wilson by leading the Steelers to a win, even in a lackluster performance. But with the Broncos approaching, Wilson could be in for a bigger push to break into the starting lineup.
