It was a disappointing affair, with a dominant third round from Paul doing the damage as the 58-year-old Tyson tired quickly.

The fight lasted the full eight two-minute rounds, with Paul winning via unanimous decision (80-72, 79-73 x 2). He landed 78 punches, while Tyson only landed 18.

The consensus from the sports world was that it was “sad” to see Tyson stagger around the ring and be made to look extremely mortal by a Gen Z celebrity.

Pendlebury, a two-time AFL premiership winner and one of only six players to have played more than 400 matches, has criticized the Paul-Tyson fight in several posts on X.

Ahead of the fight, the respected footy veteran asked his followers: “Will anyone be watching the Mike Tyson fight today?”

The 36-year-old apparently wasn’t enjoying the fight before calling out Paul, believing he could easily engage him in a fight.

Pendlebury said: “Jake Paul is a fraud! I would like to ‘box’ him for 8 rounds. A maximum of 2 are needed.

“Watched the first 3 rounds! That was terrible! Grab the money and run the track.

Pendlebury, an avid UFC fan, was more looking forward to Sunday’s UFC 309 card, which included fights between Charles Oliveira vs. Michael Chandler (lightweight) and Jon Jones vs. Stipe Miocic (heavyweight).

“Today shows why UFC is always better! The best V the best,” he said.

“Anyway, let’s go see Jon Jones and Sir Charles tomorrow at UFC309.”

Pendlebury, 36, signed a contract extension that will see him play an incredible 20th season at AFL level in 2025.

The win over Tyson takes Paul’s professional boxing record to 12-1, but there were immediate calls for him to fight a boxer his own age. His only career loss came last year to Tommy Fury.

Paul also claimed that he took it easy in the latter rounds and opted not to try to knock out Tyson.

“There was a point where I thought he wasn’t really involved anymore.

“So I don’t know if he’s tired. I can just tell his age was showing a bit.

“I just have so much respect for him and that war thing between us after he hit me, I wanted to be aggressive, take him down and knock him out.

‘But that disappeared as the rounds went on.

“I wanted to give the fans a show, but I didn’t want to hurt anyone who didn’t need to be hurt.”

It felt like Tyson habitually bit his glove more often than he actually punched Paul.

When asked about it in the ring, Tyson said, “Oh, I have a habit of biting my gloves, yeah.”

When asked why, he replied: “Um, I have a biting fixation.”

Paul said he would like to fight any opponent again soon, and even mentioned Mexican boxing megastar Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez.

Tyson also seemed to suggest he wasn’t done with boxing yet, calling Paul’s older brother Logan into the ring after the fight.

Another great, undefeated American and Hall of Famer Andre Ward, was asked during Netflix’s coverage of the Tyson-Paul event what Jake should do now to continue his career.

“I don’t think Canelo wants to do that right now,” he said. ‘He might change his mind if the number is correct.

Paul vs Tyson – Official Strikes! | 02:21

“I really think Jake is looking for legitimacy. He has the money, he has the followers. I think it’s time for Jake to invite someone much younger than Mike Tyson, a little more dangerous.

“And someone in the boxing public can say, ‘oh, we respect you, even if you lose, you took on that challenge.’

Nico Ali Walsh, Muhammad Ali’s grandson, took it a step further when he posted on X after the fight.

“Jake Paul is a disgrace to this sport,” he wrote. “If my grandfather was still there, (Paul) would call him. Absolutely no shame…I love you Mike.”

Broadcaster Stephen A. Smith said: “No more BBall players, MMA strikers or old men. It’s time for Jake to get into a real fight. He’s good enough! Let it happen.”
