Selena Gomez is looking forward to becoming a mother someday. But in a new interview, the singer-actress revealed that she is unable to conceive and give birth due to medical complications.

While I was talking to Vanity Fair In a cover story published Monday (Sept. 9), Gomez opened up about her desire to start a family with boyfriend Benny Blanco in the future, but says it won’t “necessarily be the way I envision it.”

“I’ve never said this before,” she told the publication. “But unfortunately I can’t carry my own children. I have a lot of medical issues that would put my life and the baby’s life at risk. That was something I had to grieve for a while.”

“I thought it would happen like it happens to everyone,” continued Gomez, who has been open about her struggles with lupus since sharing her diagnosis with her doctor. Billboard in 2015. “I am in much better shape. I feel blessed that there are wonderful people out there willing to do surrogacy or adoption, both of which are huge opportunities for me.”

“I’m excited about what that journey will look like, but it’s going to look a little bit different,” she added. “At the end of the day, I don’t care. It’s going to be mine. It’s going to be my baby.”

The interview comes roughly four months after Blanco — who has been in a relationship with the Rare Beauty founder since July 2023 — told Howard Stern that having children with his girlfriend is his “next goal” in life. “It’s a topic of conversation for me every day,” the producer added at the time.

“He can’t lie,” Gomez said Vanity Fair of her boyfriend’s revealing radio show appearances. “After the interview, I was laughing my head off. Like, ‘Is there anything else you want to say?'”

“I’ve never been so loved,” she continued of Blanco. “He’s just a light. A complete light in my life. He’s my best friend. I love telling him everything.”

The cover story comes at a busy time for Gomez, who recently surpassed the billionaire mark thanks to her makeup company, investments, and music and acting ventures, according to a Sept. 6 report from BloombergShe is currently up for an Emmy nomination for Best Actress for her performance in Only murders in the buildingwhose fourth season premiered on August 27, and she is receiving rave reviews for her role in Jacques Audiards Emilia Perezwhich will be released on Netflix in November, after premiering at the Cannes Film Festival in May.

As she reiterated in the interview, her biggest priorities right now are her relationships. “Before I met my boyfriend, I was single for five years, except for a few dates,” she told the publication. “And I was like, ‘Okay, if this is the vibe, what’s the most important thing to me? Family.'”
