Senate Democrats are asking for FBI files on Matt Gaetz, Trump’s pick for AG

WASHINGTON — Senate Democrats on Wednesday asked the FBI to provide the investigative files on former lawmaker Matt Gaetz as part of their review of President-elect Donald Trump’s choice to become attorney general.

Gaetz was investigated as part of a sex trafficking case, but he strongly denied wrongdoing and was never charged. The Florida Republican huddled with senators at the Capitol on Wednesday to prepare for his confirmation hearing early next year.

Democrats will hand control of the Senate to Republicans in the new year for any confirmation hearings of Trump’s nominees, so gaining access to the FBI’s files before the end of the year would ensure lawmakers would have access to them .

“The serious public allegations against Mr. Gaetz speak directly to his fitness to serve as the chief law enforcement officer for the Federal Government,” 10 Democrats on the Senate Judiciary Committee wrote in their letter to the FBI. “The unanswered questions about Mr. Gaetz’s alleged conduct are particularly important given that his associate, Joel Greenberg, pleaded guilty to the sex trafficking charge for which Mr. Gaetz was also under investigation.”

The FBI said it had received the letter and had no further comment.

Lawmakers specifically requested notes commemorating interviews, known as FD-302 forms. An attorney representing a woman in the investigation said she testified that she had sex with Gaetz when she was 17.

The only Democrat on the Judiciary Committee who did not sign the letter was Sen. Jon Ossoff, D-Ga.

The House Ethics Committee also investigated Gaetz, but ended its investigation on November 13 when Gaetz left the House and has not released any report on its findings. House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., has said he would strongly urge the committee not to release its findings to uphold the panel’s commitment to confidentiality.

The head of the House panel, Rep. Michael Guest, R-Miss., told reporters Wednesday that he views decisions about sharing information with senators or publicly releasing the report as “separate conversations for the committee to discuss.”

The head of the Senate Judiciary Committee, Sen. Dick Durbin, D-Ill., has called on the FBI and the Ethics Committee to release their findings. The letter

‘The serious allegations against Matt Gaetz must be reviewed’ Durbin said on social media. “That includes both the House Ethics Committee report and the FBI documents.”
