After LSU lost 27-20 to USC for its fifth straight season opener, a frustrated (autotag)Brian Kelly(/autotag) took the stage during his post-game press conference.

That resulted in a clip that quickly made the rounds on social media, in which Kelly stated that he was “angry” with his football team and that he regretted having to express the same concerns again after a loss.

Kelly closed by saying he’s not doing a good enough job as a coach, but that wasn’t enough to avoid the wrath of the national media, including First Take’s Shannon Sharpe, who minced no words when she criticized Kelly on Monday morning.

“I think it’s bullshit. I think he should have started with what he ended with. ‘I’m not doing a good enough job.’ He did the exact same thing last year when Florida State got the better of them. ‘Obviously, we’re not the team I thought we were.’ No, you’re not the coach you thought you were,” Sharpe said. “At some point, it comes down to coaching. It comes down to accountability.

“You had 10 penalties for basically 100 yards. You coach that behavior or you condone that kind of behavior. But how about this: ‘Oh, their quarterback outplayed ours.’ Lincoln Riley out-coached you.”

Sharpe went on to say that Kelly should have taken more responsibility and vented his frustrations to his players behind closed doors.

“The really great coaches – look at Dabo. When he got a beating from Georgiahe said, ‘That’s coaching. That’s my fault.’ Coach Saban always did that,” Sharpe said. “The really, really good coaches, the coaches that can get to their players and make them understand, even if a player makes a mistake or does something repeatedly, they’ll accept it and go behind closed doors.

“If he wanted to have these kinds of conversations, ‘Guys, we talked about this all summer. We had this problem a lot last year. We’re starting to feel good about ourselves and we’re getting teams back in the game. And it cost us dearly.’ If you want to do that behind closed doors, I have no problem with that. But Brian Kelly has a history of doing this, publicly reprimanding his players and absolving himself of responsibility.”

They’re harsh words, to be sure, but there’s a similar frustration among LSU fans after the team once again failed to come up with a win against an opponent from another top conference in Week 1.

There is still plenty of time to turn the tide, but the Tigers already face many questions just one game into the season.
