Imagine feeling like having dinner with Anna Wintour. To discuss CDFA/Fashion business, which is really cool and important and one of the few things you’re willing to leave the house for because you’re kind of in a bind and need to rest up before a big trip. So you go glam and you get all shiny and cute. And then when you get to the restaurant, it’s just your boyfriend proposing? What a disappointment! Just kidding, Shaun White’s proposal to Nina Dobrev actually sounds really sweet.

Dobrev and White announced their engagement Fashion, which is only fair, since White used the magazine as a reason to lure Dobrev out of the house. According to White, Dobrev is a planner. She is rarely surprised, but she does like to be surprised, so he did everything he could to make his proposal a shock to her system. Dobrev had suspected White would pop the question when they were in South Africa for the Earthshot awards ceremony. So he decided to actually do it a few weeks earlier in New York. Good plan, right? Wrong! Dobrev told him that she didn’t want to go to Africa anymore. So White came up with an offer she couldn’t refuse. He had his publicist send a fake invitation to a fake CDFA/Fashion dinner with Anna Wintour. “He made the invitation look so legitimate,” Dobrev says. White hired glamor and pretended it was sourced Fashionand waited for her to arrive at The Golden Swan.

When Dobrev got there and saw White under an arch of white roses, she said she “went into shock. I just froze and stared at him,” she says. “She says, ‘So wait, Anna’s not here?’” White says. Dobrev doesn’t remember the rest of her proposal and says she blacked out a bit. But she said yes, and all of the couple’s friends and family came to party! But not Anna Wintour. She better get an invite to the wedding.
