OMAHA, Nebraska (AP) — Omaha police arrested a suspect Tuesday, about a half-hour after a shooting that seriously injured a teenage boy at a high school in Nebraska’s largest city.

Families rushed to Omaha Northwest High School after the school counselor reported the shooting at 12:23 p.m. during lunch. Omaha Deputy Police Chief Sherie Thomas said officers from several departments rushed to the school and found the victim inside.

Thomas said police believe the shooting was an isolated incident between two students. The 14-year-old suspect was arrested three blocks away, about 30 minutes later.

Parents hugged their children with tears in their eyes in the parking lot as the first students left the school after 1 p.m. The remaining students were reunited with their families in the hours that followed.

Thomas said a 15-year-old boy was seriously injured in the shooting and taken to the hospital. She said the victim was in stable condition several hours after the shooting on Tuesday.

A student told KETV he was coming back to school after lunch and was running as fast as he could when he heard screams and saw people running because he didn’t want to die.

Two nearby Catholic high schools — Marian and Roncalli — were also closed following the shooting, but those closures were lifted after the arrest.

Devon DeMott told the Omaha World-Herald that he immediately ran to school from his home a few blocks away when his son texted him saying there had been shots fired.

“On a fatherly instinct, I jumped in the car and drove over there,” said DeMott, who was pleased to see a significant police presence upon arrival.

The school district said there will be no classes at Northwest High on Wednesday, but students will return on Thursday.
