A viral post says New Yorkers should prepare for the first major snowstorm in just a few weeks.

We looked at this prediction.

November snow for New York?

On Thursday, I was shocked to receive a text from my aunt who was concerned after reading an article I wrote about a major snowstorm in New York around November 15th.

I was surprised by the text, because I didn’t write the article and haven’t seen any reports from weather sources I trust about a major snowstorm next month.

I recently reported on the dates when the Farmers’ Almanac issues a warning for when New York could experience “large amounts of snow.”

In his report he indicated the chances of above-normal snowfall for the period November to March.

I found the article my aunt read. And it reports on a current weather social media page that there is a chance of snow for the ‘northeast’ around November 15.

“If this wave breaking out over Northern Europe is real, the Northeast will get a real snowstorm around November 15 to 20,” says USAwx on X, formerly Twitter.

The main page for USAwx says the page is for “entertainment and recreation” purposes and does not list weather qualifications.

It does say:

In the past 10 days+, USAwx has posted about the likelihood of the “coldest Halloween in 50 years…”

As well as a “Cold and Windy Halloween in the East.”

Long-term forecasting is very difficult because weather patterns are always changing.

Hudson Valley could have the hottest Halloween ever

For example, parts of New York State and the Hudson Valley are now forecast to have what could be the warmest Halloween on record.

Right now, a high of 81 degrees is forecast in Poughkeepsie, New York, which is a few degrees higher than the record high set in 1948.

Moral of the story: When you see a long-range forecast, don’t worry until a few days before the storm.
