Snow, cold wind coming

play

Central Indiana is poised to see its first cumulative snowfall of the year on Thursday, thanks to a cold front blowing into the Midwest starting Wednesday.

Despite earlier reports that the snow may not stick around, forecasters with the National Weather Service in Indianapolis now predict that 1 to 2 inches of snow could accumulate in the Indy metro area, potentially impacting rush hour traffic on Thursday.

Here’s what Hoosiers living in Central Indiana can expect.

When does it start snowing in Central Indiana?

Meteorologists said Central Indiana could see light snowfall Wednesday night through Thursday morning, followed by a second round of snow starting around 4 p.m. Thursday.

Gusty winds and snow could impact Hoosiers’ commutes Thursday

Along with the icy weather, forecasters said Hoosiers should brace for strong, frigid winds that could reduce visibility on some roads.

“We’re looking at wind gusts in the 60 mph range with a peak around (Thursday afternoon), so that could cause lower visibility than what we usually see with these snow numbers,” said NWS meteorologist Aaron Updike, who advised motorists urged to be careful. and stay informed about the weather.

“The snowfall should be pretty compact, so it shouldn’t drift much, but when you have high winds like that, you could have slicker roads,” Updike said. “If you’re traveling to and from work on Thursday, make sure you give yourself extra time.”

How Much Snow Can Indianapolis, Indiana Get?

Some areas of central Indiana could see 1 to 2 inches of snow by late Thursday, while areas north of Indianapolis and into Kokomo could see 2 to 3 inches of snow, according to a social media post from NWS.

The heaviest snowfall is expected from Thursday afternoon through Thursday night.

“That’s going to make for a pretty gloomy and cold Thursday,” NWS meteorologist Andrew White said Tuesday. “Parts of Central Indiana will experience wind chills in the upper teens.”

Temperatures are expected to remain cold later in the week, with highs between 30 and 40 degrees Friday through Sunday.

This way you prevent frozen pipes

To prevent pipes from freezing, Citizen Energy Group recommends taking the following steps:

  • If indoor temperatures drop as low as 55 degrees, open your faucets slightly so they drip continuously.
  • Open cabinet doors under the sinks to allow warm air to circulate around the pipes.
  • Insulate pipes that may be exposed to cold air.
  • Make sure that the lid of your water meter pit is properly secured. If your water meter is in the basement, make sure the area is heated and check for broken windows.
  • If you have pipes in the garage, make sure to keep the garage doors closed and try to insulate the pipes.
  • Know where your water shut-off valve is located so you can quickly turn off the water if a pipe bursts. These taps can be found in the garage, basement, meter cupboard or main entrance for the water pipes in your home.

Signs You Have Frozen Pipes

  • Your taps don’t flow and your toilets don’t refill after a flush
  • A water pipe is frozen or bulging

What should you do if your pipes freeze?

If you notice a frozen pipe, Citizens Energy recommends the following:

  • Turn off the water at the shut-off valve.
  • Open the tap attached to the frozen pipe to allow water to flow through and relieve the pressure buildup. Running water through the pipe can also melt any remaining ice.
  • Apply gradual heat to the section of frozen pipe. This can be done by wrapping the pipes in bath towels or by using a space heater to heat the area where the pipes are located. Continue heating until water pressure is restored and water flows freely. Be careful never to apply direct heat to the affected area.
  • If a pipe is bulging or you cannot find the location of the blockage, call a licensed plumber.
