Snow continues to pile up in the Cascades, a powerful storm heads towards the Pacific Northwest

A Storm Tracker 2 weather warning remains in effect for the Oregon Coast Range and Cascade mountain passes. Heavy snow is falling in the Cascades, with over a foot of new snow falling at Government Camp in the last 24 hours.

“Snow levels will remain low enough for more snow accumulation in the foothills and mountain passes as the next weather maker moves in from Tuesday afternoon into Tuesday evening,” said Storm Tracker 2 meteorologist Rhonda Shelby. “Travelers in the Cascades should remain prepared for sometimes extreme winter driving conditions.”

The Winter Storm Warning expires Monday evening at 10 p.m. The National Weather Service says heavy snow above 2,000 feet with additional accumulations of 10 to 15 inches. “Traveling can be very difficult to impossible. The hazardous conditions may impact Monday morning and evening commutes,” NWS Portland said.

A strong Pacific storm will target the northwest on Tuesday, bringing the possibility of strong winds along the coast and gusty winds from the east around the Portland area.

“I expect there will be several places in our region tomorrow that will experience increased impacts and potentially damaging wind gusts. Southerly coastal wind gusts during the storm could reach speeds of 60 to 60 miles per hour along the beaches; and 80+ offshore. North Central Oregon and Central Oregon will be in the best area to receive southerly wind gusts near 60 miles per hour tomorrow afternoon or evening,” Shelby said. “Gorge residents will be recipients of strong easterly winds in response to that strong low pressure just off our coastline. Wind gusts could reach 40 to 45 mph everywhere from Multnomah Falls to The Dalles.”

High-resolution weather models have hinted that some areas could see strong easterly gusts depending on the last track of the low-pressure center, Shelby added.

Storm Tracker 2 Meteorologist Dave Salesky has the latest forecast at 5 p.m. on KATU’s Digital Editon, at 8 p.m. after Monday Night Football, and on KATU News at 11 p.m.
