Snow predicted for ‘TNF’

play

(This story has been updated to reflect new information.)

As the NFL season gets longer, the days get shorter. The weather is getting colder and more unpredictable, and it looks like the Week 12 “Thursday Night Football” game could be played in sloppy conditions.

The Cleveland Browns will host the Pittsburgh Steelers in Week 12. The AFC North rivalry has often been a slugfest historically, and the battle between the division foes could be significantly affected by bad weather in Cleveland.

There is a 90% chance of precipitation during the Browns vs. game. Steelers. It’s not clear if temperatures will be cold enough to create snow or if it will just rain, but either way the precipitation and wind will create unfavorable conditions for the players, especially quarterbacks and kickers.

And if it gets cold enough that Cleveland’s storm turns into lake-effect snow, NFL fans could be treated to a whiteout game.

Here’s what you need to know about the weather for the Browns vs. Steelers at Cleveland on Thursday night.

The Browns-Steelers game is expected to be played under less than favorable conditions on Thursday evening. Temperatures will drop as low as 36 degrees Fahrenheit during the game, with a 90% chance of precipitation during the game, according to Weather.com.

Snow will fall early in the game on Thursday. A winter weather advisory is in effect for Cuyahoga County, citing a possible accumulation of 3 to 4 inches of snow. The current forecast suggests that the heaviest snow will fall between 7:00 PM and 8:00 PM ET, right before and during the start of the game.

That should make footing on the field difficult. It will also make the pitch and pigskin more slippery, which can cause more drops, slips and mistakes than normal.

Add to that the steady winds of 20 to 25 miles per hour that are expected to blow off Lake Erie during the game with gusts in excess of 60 miles per hour, and it will be difficult to both kick and move the ball through the air .

NFL Network’s Steve Wyche posted on X, formerly Twitter, what the field looks like less than an hour before kickoff. While the snow is falling, there are no accumulations to report yet.

Despite the conditions, Browns tight end David Njoku treats warmups as just another day at the beach while meeting the fans.

If the game goes later in the 11:00 PM ET hour, the snow should turn to rain.

According to Weather.com, it will be wet, windy and snowy during the Browns-Steelers game. Below are the full details of Thursday’s forecast:

  • High temperature: 40 degrees
  • Low temperature: 35 degrees
  • Chance of precipitation: 100%
  • Wind: 20-30 mph (gusts up to 60 mph)

The bad weather will reach its peak around game time, as there is an 87% chance of “heavy snow” at 8:00 PM ET. The “Thursday Night Football” game is scheduled to start at 8:15 PM ET. From there, the wind will stabilize, while precipitation will gradually change to rain as the game progresses.

Below is the hourly Cleveland forecast for Thursday evening:

  • 7:00 PM ET: 35 degrees, heavy snow (83%), 22 km/h wind
  • 8:00 PM ET: 35 degrees, heavy snow (87%), 22 km/h wind
  • 9:00 PM ET: 38 degrees, rain/snow (78%), 21 km/h wind
  • 10pm ET: 39 degrees, Rain (73%), 11 mph wind
  • 11:00 PM ET: 40 degrees, Showers (47%), 22 km/h wind
  • Midnight ET: 41 degrees, Showers (36%), 22 km/h wind

Browns vs. Steelers fantasy prospects

The weather during the Browns vs. game Steelers will impact key fantasy contributors in Week 12 – a less-than-ideal reality considering six NFL teams are byeing in the first “Byemageddon” scenario of the 2024 season.

Some fantasy football managers may have no choice but to trust certain players, but here’s what you can expect from the top potential fantasy contributors in this matchup.

Stock down: QBs Russell Wilson and Jameis Winston

Throwing the ball consistently will be difficult given the high winds and variable precipitation during Thursday’s game. Both Wilson and Winston could draw starting consideration if just one element of weather were a factor, but neither seems like a good option to back in this matchup.

And fantasy owners should be especially wary of Wilson, who won’t be able to make his signature deep passes with consistent accuracy.

Stocked to: RBs Najee Harris, Jaylen Warren and Nick Chubb

It’s not likely the Steelers and Browns will pass the ball consistently on Thursday. That will lead to each team trying to make the series happen, which could lead to a lot of touches for the fantasy backs in this matchup.

Harris is averaging 20.4 touches per game this season and has at least 21 in four consecutive games. He could approach the 25-touch category if the Steelers can establish their running game against Cleveland.

Warren could benefit similarly, but even more so as a receiver. He had four catches against the Baltimore Ravens last week and if Wilson can’t get the ball downfield, Warren could get more opportunities to make plays with swing passes and screens. That makes him a solid flex to rely on in PPR competitions.

Finally, Chubb has at least 11 carries in each of his four games since returning from a devastating knee injury. He may have trouble finding space against a strong Steelers defense (fourth in the NFL, with 90.8 rushing yards per game), but he’s still a volume threat who could get a touchdown.

Stock down: WRs George Pickens, Cedric Tillman, Jerry Jeudy and Elijah Moore

The Browns receivers are coming off a big game against the New Orleans Saints, but they aren’t likely to repeat that production. Winston threw for almost 400 yards in that game, but won’t have the same ability to threaten the Steelers on the field in inclement weather.

As for Pickens, he has had a big impact beyond the contested catch pass numbers. Those aren’t as likely to be available to him in this matchup, as Wilson seems likely to focus on shorter passes. Pickens can still do damage in that area, but his big-play advantage will diminish significantly.

Stock: Steelers D/ST and Browns D/ST

If the passing games can’t get going in this matchup, both NFC North teams will have a chance to put together solid defensive performances. Sure, their sack floors are lowered, but their opponents’ scoring ceilings are also lowered.

Add to that the fact that a slick football can lead to a loss of possession and this has everything to do with a defensive struggle. Feel free to cheer on any team in fantasy football formats, and don’t be afraid to trust the Browns when you need a farewell streamer.

Stock down: K Chris Boswell

Boswell is one of the best kickers in fantasy football, but the circumstances for this game likely won’t allow him to make long kicks. That will cap his ceiling and make him more of an average play. You can still start it if you don’t want to select two kickers; just don’t expect a big game from him.
