Snowstorm in Colorado cuts power to 52,000 people, thousands are still without power

At least 52,000 homes in Colorado lost power during the peak of last week’s snowstorm, which dropped several feet of wet, heavy snow across the state, according to Xcel Energy.

As of 11 a.m. Sunday, 8,297 homes were without power across Colorado, an increase of nearly 6,000 homes as of 10 a.m., according to the utility’s outage map. The majority of the remaining outages – 98 outages affecting 8,232 homes – occurred in the Denver area.

As of 10 a.m. Sunday, Xcel officials had reported that 2,624 homes in Colorado were without power.

According to Xcel Energy spokesperson Michelle Aguayo, there are about 10 to 40 electrical outages on a typical day.

Aguayo said trees were the main cause of all outages in the state this weekend, as they were dragged onto power lines by the storm’s wet and heavy snow.

As of Saturday evening, Xcel crews were still working to fix outages that began as early as 5:30 p.m. Friday, Aguayo said. New outages continue to be reported.

“Crews typically focus first on repairs that will restore power to the greatest number of customers,” Aguayo said in an emailed statement to the Denver Post on Saturday. “The teams then move to the neighborhood level before dealing with individual customer disruptions.”

Aguayo said this storm caused a large number of outages to individual properties or small groups of customers, so it will take some time for crews to reach all affected locations and make repairs.
