In the SEC matchup of the week, the South Carolina Gamecocks welcomed the 16th-ranked LSU Tigers to Williams-Brice Stadium in front of a raucous crowd. The Gamecocks took the opening kickoff and never looked back as they led LSU 24-16 at halftime. On the other hand, LSU found some offensive success late in the game but is still searching for answers on defense.

South Carolina Offensive Coordinator Dowell Loggains has started on the offensive side of the ball for the Gamecocks and has had a great game thus far, mixing the run and pass well. The Gamecocks offensive line has done a good job of creating holes in the run game, while Sellers has threatened the Tiger defense with his legs, including a 75-yard TD run late in the second quarter.

Sellers has been inconsistent in the passing game thus far, finishing the half 8/16 for 112 yards and one interception. If the Gamecocks can continue to find holes in the running game, it should open up more opportunities to push the ball downfield. Sellers simply needs to be more effective at hitting downfield shots more efficiently.

The Gamecocks need to clean up the turnovers in the second half. LSU wins the turnover battle after an interception in the end zone and a fumble recovered inside the South Carolina 20-yard line. That could spell trouble for the Gamecocks as the game progresses.

Going into the game, the biggest battle was going to be between the talented LSU offensive line and the dominant South Carolina defensive line. So far, the Gamecocks defensive line has won that battle through two quarters. LSU’s Garrett Nussmeier has had to withstand pressure early and often from this Gamecock front. The Tigers have not found any open holes in the running game, as the Gamecocks defense, led by Debo Williams, has shut it down, limiting the Tigers to just 41 yards on 13 carries (3.2 yards per carry).

And of course, “Beamer Ball” is in full swing. After stopping LSU’s third possession, the Tigers came up with a punt and had it blocked by South Carolina’s Monkell Goodwine. Goodwine’s blocked punt set up the Gamecock offense inside the 10-yard line and led to a touchdown by Rocket Sanders on the next play.

For LSU, they had some success in the passing game in the second quarter. The offensive line started to hold up for Garrett Nussmeier, but that was the only positive for the Tiger offense. Defensively, the Tigers struggled to get the Gamecocks off the field outside of turnovers. It will be interesting to see what adjustments LSU makes in the second half.
