Sri Lanka has increased security in tourist hotspots after the US and Israel warned citizens to leave popular beach resorts due to possible attacks on visitors.

The U.S. Embassy in Sri Lanka told citizens on Wednesday to avoid Arugam Bay, a surfing resort on Sri Lanka’s southeastern coast, after “credible intelligence warning of an attack on popular tourist locations.” Israel’s National Security Council has asked its citizens to leave immediately Arugam Bay and the south and west coast areas of Sri Lanka, adding that the country has raised the travel alert level for the South Asian island nation “due to credible terrorism threats.”
