Steelers vs. Giants score, live updates: Russell Wilson makes second Pittsburgh start on ‘Monday Night Football’

There’s a reason why Mike Tomlin is currently the longest-serving coach in the NFL. After all, who would make a quarterback change on a 4-2 team firmly in the hunt for the playoffs and the division title? But Pittsburgh, now quarterbacked by Russell Wilson, looks even more of a threat in the AFC after breaking out on offense in a 37-15 win over the Jets last week.

Wilson proved to be an upgrade over Justin Fields for the Steelers’ passing game with the ability to push the ball downfield. The resulting deep shots opened up more in the intermediate passing game for the Steelers and running lanes for Najee Harris and Jaylen Warren, who combined for nearly 150 yards rushing.

Visiting Pittsburgh on “Monday Night Football” (8:15 p.m. ET, ESPN, ABC and streaming on ESPN+) are the 2-5 New York Giants, who boast a top-10 pass defense (sixth in the NFL, 179.4 YPG) and have the most sacks in the league with 31. However, New York’s offense hasn’t been as productive, ranking 29th in yards per game, prompting head coach Brian Daboll to say this week that the team is sticking with Daniel Jones at quarterback. Jones ranks near the bottom of the league in passer rating (80.6) among qualified starters with at least five starts.

Live23 updates

  • Giants go 3-and-out

The Giants have the first punt of the game after going three-and-out on their next drive. Matt Haack’s kick goes 45 yards and the Steelers take over at their 18 yard line with 6:45 left in the second quarter.

  • Field goal: Steelers 9, Giants 6

Steelers lose a timeout because they challenged a call that had already been reviewed.

The incomplete pass call stands and Pittsburgh has to settle for a field goal on 4th and 8. Chris Boswell makes his third field goal of the night, this one a 27-yard kick.

  • George Pickens’ apparent TD catch was ruled incomplete

Russell Wilson hits George Pickens on a flag route in the back of the end zone for an apparent touchdown. But he is ruled out of bounds after being hit by D’yontae Johnson. His left foot never lands inside the boundaries.

However, the Steelers dispute the call.

  • Field goal: Giants 6, Steelers 6

Malik Nabers catches a 21-yard pass near the front pylon, but his right foot lands out of bounds.

New York had to settle for a field goal and Greg Joseph’s 39-yard kick tied the score at 6-6.

The Giants committed five penalties on that drive, costing them 30 yards.

  • Giants TD was eliminated by penalty

Daniel Jones hits Chris Manhertz for a 16-yard score, but the touchdown is taken off the board due to an illegal shift penalty on Malik Nabers.

Both teams have now had their TDs taken off the board with penalties.

  • Giants convert a 4th down

A false start penalty on Greg Van Roten pushed the Giants back to the 38-yard line and a 3rd and 12.

Daniel Jones completes a 10-yard pass to Malik Nabers and Brian Daboll opts to go for it on 4th-and-2 at the 28. Jones hits Nabers for a 5-yard gain and a first down.

  • End of first quarter: Steelers 6, Giants 3

The first quarter ends with New York on a 3rd and 7 at the Steelers 33 yard line.

Alex Highsmith was called for manhandling the passer bringing the ball to Pittsburgh’s 36.

  • The Giants offensive line opens big holes

Tyrone Tracy gets a 10-yard run, thanks to a huge hole created by the Giants’ offensive line. He has 21 yards on five carries so far.

  • Holding blasts 20-yard run for Tyrone Tracy, Jr.

The Giants are hurt by another penalty. Tyrone Tracy Jr. takes off a 20-yard run, but it’s negated by a holding call on Jon Runyan.

  • Field goal: Steelers 6, Giants 3

A one-yard run from Najee Harris, followed by two consecutive incomplete passes from Russell Wilson, means Pittsburgh has to settle for another field goal. Chris Boswell is good from 25 yards.

  • Back-to-back big plays for Pittsburgh

The Steelers get a 29-yard catch from Darnell Washington and follow that up with a 26-yard run from Najee Harris. First and goal from the Giants’ 8-yard line.

  • Field goal: Giants 3, Steelers 3

Greg Joseph’s 29-yard field goal ties the score at 3-3.

Both teams have strong opening drives that stalled in the red zone due to penalties.

  • Postponement of the game against the Giants

Red zone penalties also hurt the Giants. New York called for a postponement of the game, making it 3rd and 12 from the Pittsburgh 18-yard line.

  • Explosive play from Daniel Jones

Daniel Jones hits Darius Slayton for a 43-yard pass on 1st and 10 to the Steelers’ 16-yard line.

  • Field goal: Steelers 3, Giants 0

Broderick Jones’ face mask punishment was costly. It took a touchdown off the board and turned a 2nd-and-9 into a 2nd-and-24.

Steelers get a four-yard run and nine-yard reception from Jaylen Warren, but have to settle for a Chris Boswell field goal. A promising ride falls apart at the end.

    Steelers 3, Giants 0

  • Steelers TD was wiped out by a penalty

The Steelers scored on an 11-yard TD pass from Russell Wilson to George Pickens. But a facemask penalty on Broderick Jones nullifies the touchdown.

  • Dexter Lawrence’s shoe comes off

Dexter Lawrence briefly came off the field, but that was because his left shoe came loose. No injuries, Giants fans.

  • Najee Harris runs fast

Najee Harris has 25 yards on his first three carries. His last two rushes went for 10 yards each.

  • Steelers get the ball first

The Giants won the coin toss and postponed it, so the Steelers will be on the offensive to start the game.

  • Steelers vs. Giants of all time

It doesn’t mean anything for tonight’s game, but the Giants have an overall record of 44-31-3 against the Steelers.
