Stefanik in the running for a job in the Trump administration

House GOP Conference Chairwoman Elise Stefanik, R-N.Y., is vying for a role in the new Trump administration, Fox News Digital is told.

Stefanik became the first congressional leader to back President Trump’s third White House campaign when she endorsed him in November 2022.

She is now being discussed as a potential candidate for U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, two people familiar with such discussions told Fox News Digital.

One of them said Stefanik was “high on the list” of potential candidates.

For Stefanik and other House lawmakers vying for a role in the Trump administration, however, their chances will depend heavily on where the majority falls in their chamber.

Republicans are optimistic about retaining the majority in the House of Representatives after victories in the Senate and the White House on election night. However, the outcome will likely come down to a handful of close races in California, Arizona, Alaska and Oregon – and both sides expect the margin to be slim.

Replacing an MP, even someone from a district that strongly favors one party or the other, usually takes at least several weeks. Moreover, Republican leaders have already indicated that they do not want to waste time using their majorities in Congress to advance Trump’s agenda.

It is not immediately clear who else is vying for the role of UN ambassador.

Stefanik is said to be familiar with foreign affairs as a senior member of the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence and the House Armed Services Committee.

The Republican from New York has been an outspoken supporter of Israel since the Hamas terrorist attack on October 7. She is also one of Trump’s closest allies in Congress, having led several “Women for Trump” rallies and other events during the campaign for him.

Stefanik announced to House colleagues on Thursday that she is running again for her current leadership role as chair of the House GOP conference.

Stefanik’s office did not return a request for comment from Fox News Digital.

One of Trump’s former U.N. ambassadors was Nikki Haley, who challenged the president-elect for the 2024 Republican nomination before dropping out and ultimately endorsing him.

Fox News Digital was also told that another member of the House of Representatives, retired Green Beret Rep. Mike Waltz, R-Fla., is being considered for a role in the Trump administration. Waltz is seen as a potential candidate for defense secretary, although Trump is also considering options from the private sector and others, Fox News Digital was told.

In addition to his military service before coming to Congress, Waltz served as an adviser to Defense Secretaries Robert Gates and Donald Rumsfeld and spent time in the private sector as CEO of defense contractor Metis Solutions.

He currently serves with Stefanik on the House Armed Services and Intelligence Committees, in addition to the House Foreign Affairs Committee.

Waltz’s office did not respond to an email seeking comment.

Karoline Leavitt, spokeswoman for the Trump-Vance transition, told Fox News Digital when asked for comment on the possible appointments: “President-elect Trump will soon begin making decisions on who will serve in his second administration. Those decisions will be announced as soon as they are made.”
