Steph Curry endorses Kamala Harris at DNC, months after suggesting he might one day run for president

NBA superstar Steph Curry may have taken a big step in his bid to launch a career within the Democratic Party.

Curry endorsed Kamala Harris for president in a pre-recorded message during the Democratic National Convention on Thursday.

Curry’s endorsement of Harris is his latest political statement after taking a neutral stance on abortion. He previously claimed the moon landing was a hoax and later walked back Barack Obama’s order to retract those statements.

“I believe that Kamala as president will restore unity and move our country forward,” Curry said.

Curry, who wears his gold medal from the Paris Olympics in the video, referenced his meetings with Harris when the vice president met with the U.S. Olympic men’s basketball team before it competed in Paris and when the Golden State Warriors visited the White House after winning the 2022 NBA Finals.

Curry’s endorsement comes three days after Golden State Warriors coach Steve Kerr made a surprise speech at the convention on Monday. That night, the coach referenced Curry’s signature “night night” celebration and joked that Democrats would use the celebration to mock Trump in the event of a Harris victory in November.

Curry previously supported Joe Biden for president in 2020 and Hillary Clinton in 2016.

Thursday’s endorsement comes just five months after Curry indicated he may pursue a career in politics and even run for president someday.

In an interview with CBS Mornings On March 12, Curry did not rule out running for president when asked about his interest in politics.

“I have an interest in using every bit of my influence for good,” Curry said. “So, if that’s the way to do it, then maybe.”

In September 2022, Curry spoke openly about his political beliefs in an interview with Rolling Stone.

“I have certain beliefs that not everyone agrees with,” Curry said. “As long as there is equality, in the sense that you have all of your protections and rights as a citizen, that should be the low bar that everyone should abide by.”

Curry, who had a Christian upbringing at Charlotte Christian High School in North Carolina, added that he does not consider himself pro-choice or pro-life, nor did he feel the need to speak out against the June 2022 reversal of Roe v. Wade.

Curry has played golf with Barack Obama and claims the former president even once cursed at him after he promoted a conspiracy theory. After making comments suggesting the 1969 moon landing was a hoax on the Vince Carter-hosted podcast “Winging It” in December 2018, Curry says he received a stern email from Obama asking him to publicly retract the comments.

“That night I got an email… a pretty stern, direct one from President Obama,” Curry told Rolling Stone, adding that Obama said, “‘You’ve got to do something about this.’”

Two days after making his comments, Curry told ESPN that his remarks were a joke and subsequently accepted an invitation to work with NASA.
