Storms with rain and snow will move through New Mexico this weekend

Our first storm system of the fall is moving into New Mexico today. Heavy rain, severe storms and mountain snow will move in throughout the weekend.

High winds developed across the western half of New Mexico on Friday ahead of our first fall storm of the season. Albuquerque has recorded wind gusts of more than 50 miles per hour, creating areas of blowing dust. Isolated showers, a few thunderstorms and mountain snow also moved through the state today. A strong cold front will move across the state tonight and even brought snow to Gallup earlier. Thanks to the approaching storm, showers and thunderstorms will continue overnight through Saturday morning.

The storm system will continue to move through New Mexico throughout the day on Saturday. Rain and mountain snow will remain mostly concentrated in the northern and eastern half of the state. Heavy snowfall may be possible in the northern mountains and especially in the San Juan Mountains of southwestern Colorado. Although in New Mexico, the heaviest snow will remain on mountaintops, with little impact on most. However, strong to severe storms are likely in eastern New Mexico on Saturday evening. These storms will produce heavy rainfall and may be accompanied by gusty winds, large hail and even some isolated tornadoes. Temperatures will be much cooler across the state on Saturday, with breezy winds.

Heavy rain will continue in parts of eastern New Mexico Saturday night into Sunday morning, while western New Mexico begins to dry out. Scattered showers and thunderstorms, along with mountain snow, will continue across northern and eastern New Mexico through Sunday evening. Once this storm passes Sunday evening, parts of eastern New Mexico will see anywhere from 1 to 5 inches of rain. While above 30,000 feet, the northern mountains have seen a few to several inches of snow, with up to 10 feet in the San Juans of southwestern Colorado. Temperatures will be very cold when we leave the house Monday morning as drier and colder air filters in behind the storm system.

A warming trend begins Monday as high pressure begins to build again over the Southwest. This will keep our weather calm and dry throughout next week. High temperatures will rise above normal again on Tuesday.
