Strong Storm System will move into Oklahoma on Monday

The chance of showers and storms is likely to remain until the afternoon before moving east early Monday afternoon.

What’s the weather like on Monday?

Rain timeline on Monday.

The threat of strong to severe storms will be possible. Cooler and dry conditions are expected for the rest of the week.

A surface low is deepening quickly over parts of southwestern Oklahoma and will reach central Kansas early Monday afternoon.

A strong upper level system combined with an intense low level jet is also impacting Oklahoma this morning, bringing showers and thunderstorms to many locations.

What can you expect on Monday?

A flood watch is in effect for some locations with the possibility of 1 to 3 inches of rain with some locally higher amounts. Severe weather is possible with this system and a tornado watch is currently in place until mid-morning for locations along and west of the I-35 corridor.

A narrow line of thunderstorms is likely to arrive in the Tulsa metro from the west later Monday morning.

Weather conditions Monday morning.

Although instability at the surface may be low, the potential for very strong dynamical energy could still allow for some severe storms to occur.

Weather conditions Monday afternoon.

The biggest threat would be damaging winds, but a rapid increase within the line of thunderstorms cannot be ruled out. This squall line is expected to weaken as it moves into far eastern Oklahoma, leaving Arkansas between 2 and 3 p.m.

Weather conditions Monday afternoon.

Ambient winds are likely to range between 25 and nearly 45 mph today, and a wind advisory is issued for areas along and northwest of the I-44 corridor.

As the line of thunderstorms moves from west to east during mid-morning to early afternoon, drier air arrives over northwestern areas by the afternoon.

This dry slot will effectively limit precipitation chances for northeastern Oklahoma while continuing to produce very strong winds and decreasing cloud cover.

The upper air trough will be located in northwestern Oklahoma this afternoon and may produce some low-top supercells. This afternoon, activity will continue in northwestern Oklahoma and southwestern Kansas Monday afternoon.

Temperatures will reach the upper 60s to lower 70s. A Pacific front will move through the area later Monday evening, bringing slightly cooler weather Tuesday morning.

Highlights this week.

Temperatures on Tuesday morning will start in the low 40s and end with daytime highs in the low 60s.

A weak upper level wave will move from southeastern Colorado through far northern Oklahoma Tuesday evening and early Wednesday morning.

Most, if not all, of the data shows this wave over the area without precipitation. However, this will bring cooler weather for Wednesday through Friday. Morning lows will fall into the 30s and daytime highs will fall into the 50s.

Lows this week.

Friday will see relative warming throughout the weekend, with afternoon highs reaching the lower 60s before our next front approaches Sunday into early Monday, with a few showers or storms, followed by another strong cool down early next week.

Hurricane update

The National Hurricane Center continues to monitor Tropical Storm Sarah (without “H”), which is moving west-northwest toward Belize and Guatemala. Although the system is expected to dissipate in the Gulf of Mexico, its remnants could merge with the storm system hitting Oklahoma, increasing rainfall in parts of the southeastern United States.

Stay tuned to the weather through Monday and enjoy the mild start to the weekend before stormy conditions arrive.
