Summary and ending of season finale of ‘Agatha All along’ explained

We knew it was Agatha All Along, but the devious witch wrapped up the first season of her Marvel spinoff series on Wednesday in what might be one of the worst road trips ever. The wizardry-filled mystery show took viewers from a campy, slow-burn story to an ominously satisfying place. The double dose of finale episodes gave us a glimpse into Agatha Harkness’ origins as a wicked witch and Billy’s powers.

At first, no one knew who the real villain was: Mephisto, Salem Seven, Wanda Maximoff, Rio, Agatha, Agatha’s mother? We love a good fake-out and appreciate the Easter eggs that showrunner Jac Schaeffer and his team have embedded into the series. With the deaths that have occurred along the Witches’ Road and the sacrifice Lilia made in that incredible tarot-themed episode, we’re left wondering who the biggest threat is. Agatha’s selfish antics made us believe she was up to no good all the timebut Rio the Green Witch representing Death gave us a big reveal.

Ahead of the two-part finale, only three coven witches – and Rio – remained. Billy misses his brother Tommy; Agatha wants power. The twists, moon phases, and mommy issues in the series made us wonder who really is the main character on The Witches’ Road: Billy Kaplan/Maximoff, Agatha, Jennifer, or Rio? Besides, what witch would have his greatest wish come true?

Let’s go to the last two episodes of Agatha All along: Follow Me My Friend/To Glory at the End and Maiden Mother Crone. Don’t read on if you haven’t seen the finale yet on Disney Plus, as there are spoilers ahead.

Grow lights, Wiccan glory and the kiss of death

One thing is certain: Billy is his mother’s child. In the eighth episode, Jen, Billy and Agatha wake up in a morgue, unzip themselves from the body bags and find their personal belongings with them. Up there, grow lights shine brightly, but there’s a twist. The lights will start to click off as soon as the witches show growth. Jennifer finds out that Agatha stole and bound her powers 100 years ago, and demands them back from her. She then disappears from the room. Only Billy and Agatha are left, and they embark on a paranormal journey to locate Tommy. We learn that his soul piece ended up inside another boy who was drowning and near death. Tommy has been reincarnated into the boy, and he’s out there somewhere. Billy disappears from the room, leaving a crack in the floor.

Agatha wants her turn to fulfill her desire. A piece of Nicholas’ hair is in her cameo medallion, along with a sprout. She plants the sprout in the soil in the cracked floor and begs for more time. A dandelion blooms and then dies, and the room begins to collapse. She gets out just in time, bursts through a cellar door and comes into battle with Death, who wants to kill her with 1,000 cuts and a big beating.

Billy interrupts their confrontation in his full Wiccan costume and uses his powers to save Agatha. But she hands him over to Death (as promised) and walks away. Stunned, he communicates with her psychically and asks if this happened to Nicky (her son). In a moment of reflection she turns, kisses Death and dies in a swirl of black mist. Her decayed body turns into a bed of purple flowers. What’s clear here is that Agatha, like Wanda (especially Wanda in the Multiverse of Madness), was (and is) a grieving mother who feels guilty about her role in her child’s death.

Billy goes home to his Westview parents and soon discovers that he created the Witches’ Way with his own imagination. The hints were always there: the Wizard of Oz poster and figurines, a Lorna Wu concert poster, the vision board, a flashback to Agatha’s wink when she said, “I didn’t think you had it in you,” and Lilia told him that he had the ability to make his goals become reality. Like Wanda/Scarlet Witch, his magic can shape reality. A voice off camera startles him, and it sounds just like Agatha.

Agatha and little Nicolas Scratch

It is the series finale, Mother Maiden Crone, that shows the origins of Agatha’s power-hungry behavior. Death comes for her when she is about to give birth to Nicolas Scratch, and she begs for their lives. This time she is spared, but she does not know when Death will return. She prefers to kill witches she encounters as a way to ease Death and gain more time with her child. That’s how she’s been working for years: meeting witches, taking their powers and leaving them for dead. Her son grows up seeing this, and their years of traveling together lead him to compose a song: Down, Down, Down the Road… Down the Witches’ Road.

Ultimately, one of their nomadic stops along the way leads to Death’s revival. She comes secretly in the middle of the night, while they sleep in the woods. Agatha wakes up to find Nicky dead. That doesn’t stop Agatha from using the false promise of the false Witch’s Way to lure witches to their doom.

Back in Billy’s room, Ghost Agatha tries to get him to accept that he is just like her, and he will get used to killing witches and humans. His anger leads him to cast a banishment spell on her in her home with her Triple Goddess Medallion, the last attachment she has to this plane. It starts to work, but she summons enough physical strength to take the locket from Billy, while admitting that she is not ready to face her dead son. Instead, she offers to work with Billy. They go looking for Tommy, but not before Billy seals the door to the Witches’ Road and turns it into a memorial for Alice, Lilia and Sharon.

The open-ended finale could lead to more comics

Agatha All Around took creative license with some plot details from the comic book, such as Agatha’s ghost guiding Billy. She has been known to guide Scarlet Witch as a ghost, but this series turns that into a new opportunity and possible new storylines if the series continues. What we do know is that Tommy Shepherd is Billy/Wiccan’s brother, Speed, and that he has the same abilities as his uncle Quicksilver.

In the comics, Tommy grew up in a New Jersey town where he was bullied for being different. He and Billy reunite after years apart, not knowing how their mother’s powers created them, or caused them to break up in the first place. Tommy and Billy’s comedic adventures draw Wanda back into the fold, and a continuation of this story could delve into the lore of that, or perhaps there will be a connection to the upcoming Vision TV series. A full family reunion? Fans can keep their fingers crossed for that or perhaps an appearance from Billy’s friend Hulkling.

The comics also reunite the brothers with Marvel characters from the Young Avengers, including Ant-Man’s Cassie Lang. In the meantime, Marvel fans familiar with Scarlet Witch’s story connections should stay tuned for Wonder Man in 2025 and the future release of Vision Quest.
