Summary: Powerless Bruins falls 2-0 to Flyers

The Boston Bruins were shut out 2-0 by the Philadelphia Flyers on Tuesday night at the TD Garden as the team’s offensive woes continued.

“The offense didn’t materialize for us,” Jim Montgomery said.

After a decent start, the Bruins struggled to sustain offensive zone time. The battle continued to mount for the Bruins, who went 0-4 on the power play – with a two-man advantage with no shots. At 5v5 they either dropped shots or didn’t shoot at all. After a goal in the third, the Bruins lacked desperation with only three shots finding the net.

“We’re not making plays, we’re not doing enough to generate high-risk scoring opportunities.” Montgomery said after the game.

With the loss, the Bruins are 1-3-1 in their last five games.

Here are the highlights:

First period:

Pointless

Shots were 11-7 Bruins.

Second period:

Tyson Forester sent a wrist shot through Joonas Korpisalo’s five hole at 5:32 of the second period…1-0 Flyers.

Third period:

Joel Farabee intercepted a pass attempt by Charlie McAvoy to backhand a long shot into the empty net after entering the offensive zone at 19:36 of the third period. Final score: 2-0 Flyers.

Game Notes:

  • It feels like a broken record, but if there is no foul, there is no scoring and you don’t win the game. The Bruins couldn’t sustain enough time in the offensive zone to generate truly dangerous chances. Yes, they got shots at Ersson, but there weren’t enough that felt like good scoring chances.
  • Although they stayed mostly outside the box tonight (only two penalties), the Bruins had no control on the power play. They couldn’t take advantage of a 5-on-3. That man advantage almost ended badly when Scoot Laughton came out of the box and ended on a 2-on-1. Fortunately, Korpisalo saved the attempt excellently. In the second inning, the Bruins took too much time to set up and only had one shot on net as time expired.
  • Montgomery said they need quicker moves and a shot-first mentality moving forward on the power play. At 5v5 he said they don’t generate enough offense and they need to take advantage of the bodies in front and then shoot the puck.
  • The Bruins had just three shots on net in the third period. The team sometimes lacks desperation when it is needed most. It also comes back to the power play in the last frame and not being able to get the equalizer because the power play units hold the puck for too long and try to make nice plays instead of shooting.
  • Overall, Korpisalo looked pretty good in his third start of the season. Even though he didn’t get many shots, “he gave us a chance to win,” Montgomery said. Korpisalo came up big in the 2-on-1, with Philly getting to him with their expired penalty. He made several key saves before the Flyers scored their go-ahead goal.
  • Is there too much line change? As the Bruins try to build offense and figure out the best way to do it, how can the lines build chemistry if they aren’t the same for an entire game or a few games together?
  • The Bruins hit the road on Thursday, Oct. 31 to face the Carolina Hurricanes at 7 p.m.
