ASHEVILLE, NC (WLOS) — After a break from the summer heat of the past week, temperatures are rising again with some days this week expected to be almost 20 degrees warmer, putting records at risk.

Western North Carolina is expected to experience some of the warmest temperatures since mid-July. Monday could see the “coolest” high temperature of the workweek, and that will bring highs in the upper 80s (about 5 degrees warmer than normal).

Asheville hasn’t had temperatures of 90 degrees since mid-July, but that streak ends Tuesday with highs reaching 90 degrees. Wednesday’s high will be close to a record, with a forecast that will fall within 1 degree of the record. Thursday will be a similar day with highs in the low to mid 30s.

The chance of rain will drop temperatures on Friday, but it will still be warm and muggy with highs in the upper 80s. Until then, WNC will remain sunny and dry through the first half of the week. Early indications are for a wetter pattern, just in time for Labor Day Weekend.

The warming comes as a strong high pressure system expands across the central and eastern United States. While it will be warm here in the Carolinas, it will be much hotter in parts of the South, where temperatures could reach triple digits.
