Several police agencies conducted a large-scale manhunt at Mount Wantastiquet in Hinsdale, N.H., and Chesterfield, N.H. after an incident Flat Street in Brattleboro on Wednesday, Oct. 16, 2024. CHESTERFIELD, N.H. — Police have a suspect in custody following an hours-long standoff that started with a pursuit from Brattleboro, lead to multiple gunshots fired near Runnings in Hinsdale, N.H., and the ultimate arrest in Chesterfield, N.H.

A SWAT team from the New Hampshire State Police quickly descended upon a residence at 663 Gulf Road where orders were shouted at an individual to get down on the ground.

Once the police had their suspect in custody, the SWAT team packed up their gear as the other police officers checked on the well-being of the individual. The person was examined by members of Rescue Inc. before being loaded into a New Hampshire State Police cruiser and transported.

According to witnesses at the scene, multiple shots were fired, but it was unclear at the time who was firing.

Other witnesses reported seeing a man on a bicycle in the vicinity of Route 119 and Mountain Road, followed shortly thereafter by a number of cruisers from Brattleboro.

Route 119, which has since reopened, was temporarily closed to traffic as multiple police agencies from Vermont and New Hampshire were on scene on Mount Wantastiquet following an incident that began in Brattleboro Wednesday morning on Flat Street.

Police used the parking lot of Runnings as a command center during the operation to get the suspect. Some officers took defensive positions around the store during periods of time when shots were being fired from the suspect from the mountain.

Many officers monitored the trailhead of Mount Wantastiquet, with a BearCat armored vehicle from Keene, N.H. Some tactical crew also took up positions under the new Gen. John Stark Memorial Bridge.

The New Hampshire State Police helicopter was in the air scanning the area and a SWAT team was at the scene for several hours Wednesday morning.

Vermont State Police staged by the former Whetstone Station. Streams of police were flowing in an out of the area as they were trying to locate the individual.
