What happened on that crucial 4th-and-9?: Fran Brown suffered his first loss as head coach of the Syracuse football team on Friday night. The Orange lost to Stanford, 26-24, on a field goal with time expiring. But the game’s most important play came on 4th-and-9 from the Syracuse 45-yard line with 37 seconds left. If the Orange could keep the Cardinals from getting a first down, the game would be over. Cornerback Clarence Lewis was left alone to cover star wide receiver Elic Ayomanor, and Stanford went 27 yards to set up the winning goal. Syracuse.com’s Chris Carlson explains how it happened.

Mixed results for McCord: Syracuse quarterback Kyle McCord, who began his Orange career with two notable games, finished Friday’s game 27-of-42 for 339 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions. He was also sacked four times. While there were some great moments, like his leap into the end zone for a thrilling 19-yard touchdown, there were also moments worthy of a slap to the forehead. Brent Axe breaks down McCord’s performance and more.

Payment dispute between civil servants has led to at least 1 postponement: The boys soccer game between Cicero-North Syracuse’s and Baldwinsville on Thursday was postponed because officials did not want to be paid through a new online system used by C-NS, among many other schools. “The adults can be mad at each other. But at the end of the day, we’re in the kids’ business,” C-NS coach Mike McCaffery said. “I don’t understand why we’re canceling games.”
