Taylor Swift the coordinator? Chiefs’ Patrick Mahomes says pop star made plays

With a mastermind playmaker in coach Andy Reid, the Kansas City Chiefs have no shortage of creative offensive decisions. But if they ever need one again, star quarterback Patrick Mahomes thinks Taylor Swift can help.

“She’s really interested in football and she asks a lot of good questions. She’s already coming up with plays, so maybe we should put one in,” Mahomes joked in an interview with NBC.

Swift, of course, is more likely to continue in her role as superfan than offensive coordinator, thanks to her relationship with Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce. Swift rose to stardom among Kansas City fans last season when her performances in the private box, often alongside Mahomes’ wife Brittany, drew national attention.

But the 14-time Grammy Award winner and 40-time American Music Award winner is no ordinary girlfriend watcher, Mahomes said.

Swift is a diehard and Mahomes loves that.

“I think it’s cool to see the girls and the women that have really embraced watching football,” Mahomes said. “I know as a father of a girl, how cool it is for me to see how these little girls — these daughters — love spending time with their dad, watching football.

“And when I met Taylor, I realized how genuine and cool she is. I think that was special for me because she’s, like you said, the most famous person in the world, she couldn’t be (genuine).”

Mahomes paid tribute to Swift during a 25-minute conversation with Chris Simms, in which he previewed the Chiefs’ season and reflected on the quarterback’s career.

When the topic of Swift came up near the end of the interview, Mahomes praised Reid’s locker room management style for helping the team embrace the increased attention while still staying focused on football.

The two-time MVP quarterback also praised Kelce’s sincerity and unwavering hard work in leading the team. That Mahomes-Kelce leadership duo has paid off in the form of three Super Bowl rings for Kansas City and almost certain Hall of Fame plaques in their post-retirement future.

But when it comes to who makes the final call on Chiefs game decisions, Kansas City fans don’t have to worry about Reid getting overtaken by a pop star. Mahomes had nothing but enthusiastic support for his legendary coach.

“He’s the best. He’s obviously one of the best coaches of all time, especially when it comes to offensive minds,” Mahomes said. “The way he can continue to bring us new plays and new movements and things to keep us interested and keep us in the game every week of the season is unique.”
