INGLEWOOD — This one hurts.

And the should hurt.

“I think we definitely have to feel the loss,” 49ers defensive end Nick Bosa said. “We can’t just go on and pretend it’s okay.”

The Los Angeles Rams, who had not won a single game up to that point, took advantage of all the 49ers’ mistakes and defeated their NFC West rivals 27-24 on Sunday at SoFi Stadium.

The 49ers blew a lead of 14 points or more for the first time since the 2018 season.

And what should hurt even more is how the 49ers blew it.

The Rams had less star power than the 49ers had in the past. Defensive lineman Aaron Donald retired in the offseason. And their top two receivers, Cooper Kupp and Puka Nacua, were injured.

The 49ers were also without some of their top players, but given the way this game played out, that’s no excuse.

Below are the 49ers’ numbers after their embarrassing Week 3 loss to the Rams:

Attack with haste

The 49ers had a balanced attack with 34 rushing attempts and 31 drop backs in the passing game.

Running back Jordan Mason had 77 yards on 19 rushing attempts for a 4.1 yard average. Quarterback Brock Purdy had the same rushing average on 10 carries — some quarterback sneaks and some scrambles.

Rookie Isaac Guerendo got the most playing time, with 19 yards on five carries.

Overall it was a mediocre performance for the running game. It wasn’t bad, it wasn’t great.

Grade: C-plus

Passing attack

This is a tricky area to judge, because the good was really good, and the bad was really bad.

Purdy completed 22 of 30 passing attempts for 292 yards and three touchdowns with no interceptions. His passer rating was 137.1.

Jauan Jennings was outstanding. He was the best player on the field, catching 11 passes for 147 yards and three touchdowns.

As for the bad…

Purdy was sacked just once, but it resulted in a fumble when Rams edge Byron Young got past right tackle Colton McKivitz. That play took away a potential scoring opportunity late in the first half but resulted in no points.

The worst part of the passing game was the crucial drops by Brandon Aiyuk and Ronnie Bell.

The 49ers had a chance to win the game late in regulation, but Bell couldn’t hold on to an easy catch opportunity that could have potentially put San Francisco in position for a short field goal for the win.

If the grade were just for Purdy and Jennings, it would be an A-plus. If it were for Aiyuk and Bell, it would be an F.

Grade: B-minus

Defense with haste

The 49ers generally did a good job of containing Rams running back Kyren Williams, who had 89 yards on 24 rushing attempts, good for an average of 3.7 yards.

But Williams scored two touchdowns on the ground, including the 4-yard run that tied the score with 1:51 left in the fourth quarter.

Grade: C-plus

Passing defense

This unit was a big disappointment for the 49ers. The front four didn’t generate enough pressure on quarterback Matthew Stafford.

The Rams were missing their top receivers, Nacua and Kupp, but Stafford still completed 16 of 25 pass attempts for 221 yards and one touchdown without an interception.

Tutu Atwell had four catches for 93 yards and also received a 48-yard pass interference penalty against Isaac Yiadom.

Linebacker De’Vondre Campbell was assessed a 25-yard penalty for pass interference, putting the Rams in position for the winning field goal.

Grade: F

Special teams

For the 49ers, the special teams were a disaster for the second straight season.

The 49ers gave up a first down in the second quarter when Ronnie Rivers took the direct snap and gained 7 yards on a fourth-and-6 play. That play allowed the Rams to hang on.

Kicker Jake Moody missed a 55-yard field goal attempt that could have sealed the win late in the fourth quarter. Then a breakdown on the punt coverage team opened the door for the Rams to score the winning points.

Grade: F

Accompaniment

The 49ers should have been prepared for the fake punt in the second quarter. It caught them off guard — or at least it seemed like it.

Coach Kyle Shanahan, special-teams coordinator Brian Schneider and defensive coordinator Nick Sorensen should also take some of the blame.

There is no way the 49ers should have let the Rams stay. No way.

The 49ers made a lot of physical mistakes, but also had at least as many mental problems, which allowed the Rams to perform even better and pull out the win.

Even without Christian McCaffrey, Deebo Samuel and George Kittle, the 49ers have too much talent to help this Rams team win.

Grade: F

General

This is the worst that can happen.

There was never a moment in this game where it looked like the 49ers were in danger of losing this game. And maybe they thought they were.

When they got the chance to drive away, they did.

The 49ers didn’t make all the mistakes of their Week 2 meltdown against the Minnesota Vikings. But the games were similar enough to be cause for concern.

Once again this was a deserved defeat, with the blame going to many.
