Tech stuns undefeated No. 4 Miami, 28-23 – Football — Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets

THE PLAINS – Georgia Tech gained bowl eligibility for the second straight year and handed No. 4 Miami its first loss of the year on Saturday as the Yellow Jackets toppled the Hurricanes 28-23 at Bobby Dodd Stadium at Hyundai Field.

The Jackets (6-4, 4-3 ACC) ended a two-game skid, while the Hurricanes (9-1, 5-1 ACC) fell from first place in the ACC.

Technical quarterback Haynes King returned from a two-game absence, and along with backup Aaron Philoaided a Yellow Jackets offense that piled up 271 yards on the ground. Tech’s defense came up with three crucial fourth-down stops and a sack of Hurricanes’ quarterback Cam Ward for the only turnover of the game with less than two minutes remaining.

Using a ball-control offense and rotating QB duties between King and Philo in an effort to keep Miami’s offense off the field, Tech held the ball for nearly 35 of the game’s 60 minutes and limited the Hurricanes, who averaged better than 47 points per game. game, to a season-low in points.

Jamal Haynes rushed for 81 of his 83 yards on Tech’s opening series and burst 16 yards for the TD. King ran for a game-high 93 yards on 20 carries and scored the Jackets’ final touchdown of the game in the fourth period.

King and Philo, who combined to go 11-for-16 for 99 yards through the air, each threw a touchdown pass. King connected Malik Rutherford for one score in the second period, putting the Jackets ahead for good, and Philo struck Chase Lane for Tech’s third score of the third period, making the score 28-16.

Defensively, Tech stopped the Hurricanes on fourth down at 23 in the second quarter, did so again at 39 in the third period and again at 28 in the fourth. The Jackets pinned Miami back at 19 to start the Hurricanes’ final possession, and on second-and-10 Romello Height got to Ward and stripped the ball, which was recovered by Jordaan van den Berg with 1:48 left.

Tech returns to action on Thursday, November 21, hosting NC State for the final home game of the season. The game starts at 7:30 PM and will be broadcast nationally on ESPN.
