Ted Danson says Woody Harrelson got into a bar fight and was carjacked when they first met on the set of “Cheers.”

The actor, 76, played baseball star and bar owner Sam Malone in the NBC sitcom alongside Woody, 73, as dimwitted bartender Woody Boyd when he joined the show from the fourth series, and Ted has now told how his co-star left him stunned during their first meeting.

He said on ‘Jimmy Kimmel Live’ about Woody: “He’s a freakish creature. He’s amazing.

‘He’s such a bundle of contradictions. I think the first day we met him on Cheers – we had been filming together for three years – and he came and joined us.

“(He had been in a) bar fight (and got) carjacked (the same day) and I thought, ‘Oh dear God, that’s who that is’.”

But Ted’s fears that he was performing with a wild man were put to rest when Woody asked him to read a poem he had written.

He said, “(Woody asked), ‘Can you look at this poem I wrote?’ It’s like the most beautiful poem you’ve ever read.

“And he says, ‘Would you like to come and see the piece I wrote?’… and it’s a brilliant piece.

“You can’t put that guy in a box.”

Ted added, “One of my favorite Cheers stories is: I was waiting for (Woody), and he had to be about 30 minutes late for rehearsal.

“And we said, ‘Well, who cares?’ And someone came running in and said, ‘Woody called. He’s in Berlin. The wall is coming down and he didn’t want to miss it.”

“That’s the whimsical side of Woody, but also the beautiful side. It’s just biting off these big chunks of life. He’s just amazing.”

Ted previously said on the ‘Where Everybody Knows Your Name’ podcast about ‘Cheers’ that they and their former co-star George Wendt played ‘hooky’ from the set and experimented with hallucinogens.
