Tennessee Football Injury Report: Lance Heard Out for Vols Against Oklahoma

NORMAN, Okla. – The Tennessee (ranked 7) football team will play the Oklahoma (ranked 13) team today without starting left tackle Lance Heard.

Heard, a transfer from LSU and a first-year starter, was ruled out Friday following the updated release of the SEC’s student-athlete availability report.

Offensive lineman William Satterwhite, defensive back William Wright and Ben Bolton were listed as probable on Friday’s injury report. But all three reserve players were upgraded to active for the game against Oklahoma on Saturday’s availability report, which was released 90 minutes before kickoff.

No. 7 Tennessee (3-0) plays No. 13 Oklahoma (3-0) at 7:30 p.m. ET on ABC. It’s Tennessee’s SEC opener and Oklahoma’s first SEC game in program history.

Heard’s absence will likely keep sixth-year senior Dayne Davis in the starting lineup against Oklahoma. Last week, Davis started at left tackle when Heard did not play in the Vols’ 71-0 win over Kent State, which coach Josh Heupel suggested was precautionary due to injury.

Davis split time with John Campbell at right tackle in the first two games as Campbell recovered from a preseason injury. Campbell has played just 91 snaps in three games this season.

Here is the updated availability status for Tennessee and Oklahoma players.

Tennessee Injury Report

  • DB Jourdan Thomas (out)

  • DB John Slaughter (out)

  • OL Shamurad Umarov (out)

  • OT Lance Heard (out)

Oklahoma Injury Report

  • WR Jayden Gibson (out)

  • WR Jalil Farooq (out)

  • DB Gentry Williams (out)

  • OL Geirean Hatchett (out)

  • LB Dasan McCullough (out)

  • OL Branson Hickman (decision at the time of the game)

  • OL Jake Taylor (decision at the time of the match)

How the SEC Availability Report Works

This is the first time UT has been listed in the SEC’s student-athlete availability report, which started this season for conference play only.

The first report is released on Wednesday night of an SEC game week, with daily updates culminating in a final report 90 minutes before kickoff of a Saturday game.

Prior to match day, players are designated by their school as available, probable, doubtful, doubtful or out for the upcoming match. On match day, they are designated as available, match time decision or out.

This is what these names mean:

• Out: Not played, 0% chance to play.

• Doubtful: The chance that the player will play is unlikely, 25% chance that the player will play.

• Doubtful: Unsure to play, 50% chance to play.

• Likely: Likely to play, 75% chance of playing.

According to SEC policy, schools must accurately report the eligibility status of players. If the school knows that a player may not be able to participate in the upcoming game for any reason (injury, illness, suspension, ineligibility, or personal matter), the school must report this.

If schools fail to do so, they risk fines ranging from $25,000 for a first violation to $100,000 for a third or subsequent violation.
