Tennessee Titans vs Los Angeles Chargers live score: highlights, stats, TV channel

The Tennessee Titans’ second-half struggles continued Sunday in the 27-17 loss to the Los Angeles Chargers at SoFi Stadium.

Tennessee (2-7) allowed back-to-back touchdowns to open the second half as the Chargers (6-3) turned a 13-10 lead into a 27-10 advantage midway through the fourth quarter.

Justin Herbert had a passing and rushing touchdown, including a 16-yard touchdown pass to Quentin Johnston in the third quarter.

The Titans’ offense scored on the opening drive on a Calvin Ridley 42-yard touchdown catch, but otherwise ebbed and flowed against the tough Chargers defense.

NFL VP of instant replay Mark Butterworth said in a pool report Sunday that the replay showed clear evidence that Justin Herbert’s hand moved forward with control of the ball on the overturned fumble late in the first half.

Butterworth said a closer view of the play showed Herbert had clear control of the ball with his hand forward before losing the ball.

“We went around corners and there was a better view from the broadcast so we could see the hand coming forward,” Butterworth said. “Again, we’re going frame by frame, and the hand went forward with control of the ball and then it lost control of the ball.”

Titans Stats

  • Will Levis: 18 of 23, 175 yards, 2 TD; 5 rushes for 41 yards; fired 7 times
  • Tony Pollard: 9 carries, 44 yards; 4 catches, 19 receiving yards
  • Tyjae Spears: 7 carries, 47 yards; 3 catches, 4 receiving yards
  • Calvin Ridley: 5 catches, 84 yards, 2 TD
  • Nick Westbrook-Ikhine: 3 catches, 31 yards
  • Jack Gibbens: A total of 15 tackles

Charger statistics

  • Justin Herbert: 14-18, 164 yards, TD; 9 carries, 32 rushing yards, TD
  • Guus Edwards: 10 carries, 55 yards
  • JK Dobbins: 15 carries, 50 yards; 3 catches, 5 receiving yards
  • Quentin Johnston: 2 catches, 24 yards, TD
  • Ladd McConkey: 2 catches, 52 yards
  • Tuli Tuipulotu: 5 total tackles, 2 sacks
  • Bud Dupree: 5 total tackles, 2 sacks

Will Levis threw his second TD of the day, and Calvin Ridley caught his second TD of the day on a 15-yard catch in the final minute. But Levis’ solid overall day won’t boost the overall team performance too much. Chargers 27, Titans 17.

Tennessee moves to 2-7 on the season, with games against 7-2 Minnesota, 6-3 Houston and 7-3 Washington in the next three weeks.

Stats and comments from Brian Callahan and prospective players.

Continuing this year’s theme of former Titans playing their former team, Hassan Haskins dives over the top of the pile at the 1-yard line for the game-sealing touchdown. Haskins was a fourth-round pick in the 2022 draft by the Titans.

The Titans defense, which continues to rank well in many defensive team metrics, wasn’t very good in the second half. Chargers up to 144 rushing yards.

After a pass from Will Levis to Nick Westbrook-Ikhine for a first down gain, the Titans OL falters. Tuli Tuipulotu sacked Levis for the second time today, and Joey Bosa got his first sack of the game two plays later.

Tennessee will punt early in the fourth quarter. The Titans’ chances are slipping away.

After a Derius Davis kickoff return 56 yards, the Chargers orchestrate a TD drive to take control. Justin Herbert finds Quentin Johnston for a 16-yard touchdown pass with little pass rush for the Titans defensive line.

PAT good. LA is up 20-10.

Will Levis completes passes for first downs to Calvin Ridley, Chig Okonkwo and Tony Pollard, but the drive stalls in the red zone after a third-down jump ball to Josh Whyle falls incomplete. A 7-minute drive ends with a Nick Folk 27-yard field goal.

The Titans defense needs a turnover, and this time it needs to hold up.

Jeffery Simmons strips Justin Herbert and the ball is out. Roger McCreary picks up the ball and returns it for a touchdown.

The replay booth initiates a review and after a lengthy review the call is destroyed. Repeatedly it was judged that Herbert’s hand was moving forward in a controlled manner. That’s debatable at best, and certainly not unquestionable to this observer.

On 4th-and-1 in the Titans’ 5, the Chargers call a designed QB run for Justin Herbert, and he makes the cutback to score on a 4-yard TD run.

The LA drive was keyed by a flea flicker to Josh Palmer for 36 yards on the first play of the possession.

The Titans offense pushes into Chargers territory on a catch by Nick Westbrook-Ikhine for a first down and a 10-yard run by Tyjae Spears on a play that could have been a Chargers TFL. However, Nick Folk’s 49-yard field goal attempt goes wide right with 6:19 left in the first half. Folk had made 20 straight field goals before that miss.

Titans have 61 rushing yards on 8 carries so far. Tony Pollard had his leg checked on the bench after being tackled early in the drive, but he returned to the game a few seconds later.

Cameron Dicker caps a Chargers drive, aided by two Titans defensive penalties, with a 35-yard field goal. Titans continue to lead.

The Titans defense has been solid on third down so far, as the Chargers are 1-4 on third down.

The Titans offense lives! Will Levis sets up for a deep ball and he finds Calvin Ridley on a post route for the 42-yard touchdown pass.

Levis looked a lot more comfortable in that first drive against a stingy Chargers defense. Ridley had two big catches on the drive, including a 10-yard catch and a run on a WR screen. Levis also had a 12-yard run.

It is Levis’ longest completion this season.

A nearly seven-minute opening drive from the Chargers ends with a Titans tie in goal-to-go, with Justin Herbert sliding in front of the goal line on third down and a goal from the Titans’ 5. Cameron Dicker’s 21-yard field goal is good. Will Levis, it’s your turn.

Without mentioning the words “Titans” and “playoffs” in the same sentence, AFC South continues to struggle in non-division games. Jacksonville, with backup QB Mac Jones, loses 12-7 at home to Minnesota. Indianapolis loses 30-20 to Buffalo at Lucas Oil Stadium, with Joe Flacco throwing three interceptions.

Houston plays Detroit later today on Sunday Night Football. As for the Titans, kickoff is coming.

Titans beat reporter Nick Suss’ prediction: Titans 17, Chargers 14

Look: The Chargers’ record is what it is because they’ve beaten up terrible teams. They defeated the Raiders, Panthers, Saints and Browns 101-31. So on the one hand, this team is almost certainly not as good as its record. On the other hand, it’s hard to distance the Titans from the Raiders, Panthers, Saints and Browns of the world. The stylistic similarities between the Titans and Chargers play in Tennessee’s favor here, so there’s reason to think this will remain close. But this feels like a real toss-up.

Inactives will be announced Sunday at 1:35 PM CT. For now, here is the full injury report for the two teams heading into the match.
