Thanksgiving storms bring cold and snow and can disrupt travel plans

After a month of above-average warm temperatures in several parts of the US, the Thanksgiving week forecast predicts winter storms from the East Coast to the West Coast.

The weather forecast for Wednesday

According to Forbes, a cold front will move across the Midwest and South beginning Wednesday and make its way east on Thursday. The affected areas will experience varying rainfall and cold temperatures.

Storms that hit California and Nevada in the Sierra Nevada Range on Tuesday moved into Colorado and Utah on Wednesday, bringing 2 to 3 feet of snow to the mountains of western Colorado and 2 to 4 feet of snow to the mountains of Utah, according to Fox 13 and Forbes .

The storm system’s eastward movement will bring rain to the Midwest and Mississippi valleys in the afternoon and to the Ohio and Tennessee valleys in the evening.

In the East, people can enjoy fairly sunny and dry weather all day, but a storm brewing in the Plains and Mississippi Valley will bring rain eastward into the Appalachians.

The weather forecast for Thursday

In the Southeast and East, it will rain and snow on Thanksgiving Day. According to CNN, there is no risk of flooding, although drivers may experience reduced visibility due to rain and fog.

Low cloud can also pose a problem for pilots around airports in the East.

Much of the rest of the country will see drier conditions through Thanksgiving, although some areas, such as the Northern Plains, will see extremely cold temperatures.

“The first major Arctic outbreak of the season will occur in the Northern Plains on Thanksgiving,” the Weather Prediction Center said, according to CNN.

According to Fox 13, the snowy weather in Utah will clear up before Thanksgiving.

The forecast for the rest of the week

While much of the US will be dry, temperatures are expected to drop, with parts of the country experiencing particularly frigid cold.

After the storms leave the Midwest and Eastern US, lake effect snow will begin near the Great Lakes. Snow may continue in parts of the U.S. and high winds of 20 to 25 mph could impact airports in the Midwest.

“Travel may be very difficult to impossible in the hardest-hit areas,” the National Weather Service said of the Arctic blast expected to occur this week. “The predicted accumulations will become clearer as the event approaches.”

Traveling during Thanksgiving week

In areas affected by storms and winter weather warnings, travelers should remain cautious on the roads, if they drive at all. Motorists can ensure their safety on winter roads by:

  • Checking weather and road forecasts before driving.

  • Taking your time on dangerous roads.

  • Having the right equipment (good tires, chains, 4WD, extra food and water, blankets, warm clothes, etc.

  • Postpone travel to avoid traffic jams and standstills due to weather conditions.
