  • Rain and snow are likely at higher elevations in the west and northeast this weekend, while most other areas will remain dry.
  • The strong winds could cause delays at the airport in the northeast this weekend.
  • The forecast for next week is still uncertain, but changeable weather may occur in parts of the West and East during pre-holiday travel.

AAA estimates that nearly 80 million people will travel for Thanksgiving this year, and for some, the weather could undermine some of those plans.

Here’s a look at the weather forecast for those heading out and taking to the skies this weekend, followed by a first look at a still-uncertain forecast for travel before Thanksgiving next week.

This weekend

Much of the country will be dry, but the west coast and northeast may have some rainy, snowy and windy problem areas.

Showers are possible from California to the Pacific Northwest, with rain and mountain snow extending east into the Rockies.

In the Northeast, a persistent low-pressure system will produce scattered areas of rain and snowflakes at high elevations on Saturday, mainly inland and New England. That low will also bring gusty winds to the region, which could cause delays at the airport.

Possible delays at the airport hub: San Francisco, especially Sunday (rain, low cloud); Airports in the northeast of Megalopolis, especially Saturday (stormy winds)

Thanksgiving Week early look

A weak cold front and jet stream disruption could bring some disruptive rainfall to parts of the Great Lakes to the south and east on Monday and Tuesday. Snowfall with that system will likely be limited to the Canadian border area.

The West will experience rain showers and snow in the mountains, while jet stream disruptions will affect the region.

On Wednesday and beyond, the weather forecast for the entire country will be very uncertain, so it is still a little too early to give details.
