Rain will fall in the Northeast on Thursday morning, which will turn into a soggy Thanksgiving for dozens of states.

The weather forecast for both the New York and Philadelphia Thanksgiving parades is on target for periods of rain and drizzle with temperatures in the low 40s and chilly breezes of 10 to 25 mph.

This will be a rain storm for most major cities along I-95 in the Northeast, but sleet will mix in further inland.

Winter warnings are being posted from northern Pennsylvania into Maine, with up to a foot of snow likely in higher elevations today.

Timing it

For cities like DC, Philly, and NYC, this will be mostly a morning shower, with some slow improvements expected later in the day.

In the Mid-Atlantic, rainfall should gradually decrease by the afternoon, with Philadelphia likely ending around noon.

New York City could hold rain until about 2 p.m., while Boston will see an end to the rain closer to sunset around 5 p.m.

Parts of northern New England, especially Maine, will see rain and snow into the overnight hours before conditions improve.

After this storm dissipates, the coldest air of the season will spread over much of the country.

As cold air moves over the relatively warm waters of the Great Lakes, numerous Lake Effect Snow Warnings and Winter Storm Watches are in effect. This looks like the first major Lake Effect Snow event of the season.

The forecast calls for 10 to 4 feet of snow to fall in parts of western New York state through Monday.

The heaviest snow bands will likely remain south of Buffalo, but things could get interesting during Sunday night’s 49ers/Bills game with snow in the area.

The weather remains mostly calm in the rest of the country this weekend, but it’s a cold forecast for dozens of states in the eastern half of the country as temperatures look much more in line with the upcoming winter season.

In the west, warmer than normal temperatures are expected in the first week of December.
