Thanksgiving 2024 is approaching and millions of Americans are likely planning where they will celebrate the holiday.

Whether on the road with friends or by plane to travel with family, this year turkeys will be carved on November 28th.

In honor of the upcoming occasion, WalletHub has released a report detailing the best destinations to celebrate the day of gratitude.

The Miami-based company compared 100 of the most populous U.S. cities on five key dimensions: Thanksgiving celebrations and traditions, affordability, safety and accessibility, thanksgiving and Thanksgiving weather forecasts.

Included were pumpkin patches per capita, Christmas decoration stores per capita, the cost of Thanksgiving dinner, crime rates, traffic congestion, volunteer opportunities per capita, Thanksgiving weather forecasts and more.

WalletHub analyst Chip Lupo said the top-ranked states are showing enthusiasm for the food-filled holiday.

“The best cities to celebrate Thanksgiving all have an abundance of high-quality restaurants and places to buy festive decorations, and their residents get really excited about the holiday based on their Google search history,” he said in a press release.

Compiling data from the US Census Bureau, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, AmeriCorps and others, WalletHub revealed the top 10 cities where the Thanksgiving holiday was spent.

WalletHub revealed San Diego, California, as the best place to celebrate Thanksgiving this year for several reasons.

With an extremely high number of restaurants with at least 4.5 stars and an abundance of pumpkin patches and Christmas decoration shops, San Diego was high on the list.

Lupo told Fox News Digital that San Diego has strong “traditions, favorable weather and an abundance of festive attractions, such as highly rated restaurants and holiday decorating shops.”

According to WalletHub’s report, the Southern California city has also forecast a 1% chance of precipitation on Thanksgiving.

Atlanta and San Francisco came in second and third respectively for their travel factors.

Atlanta famously had only 10% of flights arriving or departing from the airport delayed last November – the third-lowest rate in the country.

San Francisco was praised for having one of the lowest prices for a three-star hotel room available on Thanksgiving for just $60, making it the second cheapest in the country.

Lupo said Lexington, Kentucky, and San Antonio, Texas, improved their rankings in 2024 thanks to a large number of Thanksgiving activities and an emphasis on affordability.

Cities at the bottom of the list included Anchorage, Alaska; New Orleans, Louisiana; San Bernardino, California; Hialeah, FL; and Stockton, California, which came in last.

“Stockton, California, ranks last mainly due to high food and lodging costs, limited party venues and a lack of volunteer opportunities,” Lupo said.
