The clocks are going back, but Bedfordshire MP is calling for longer summer time

The suggestions have been adopted before, namely during the First and Second World Wars, as an energy-saving measure.

It was called “Churchill Time” after Winston Churchill, who introduced the idea during World War II.

In a letter to the Secretary of State for Business and Skills, Ms Mayer said that, given the current climate crisis, a return to ‘Churchill Time’ would be an ideal way to reduce energy consumption – and bills – again.

She said it would also mean people could spend more time outdoors on autumn evenings, and would give the hospitality and retail sectors a much-needed boost.

The MP said research has shown that road accidents increased by 19% in the two weeks immediately after the clock change in October, as more people drive home in the dark. A change to lighter evenings could therefore also reduce the number of accidents and any burden on the NHS.

Mayer said: ‘During World War II, we maximized daylight hours to conserve vital energy sources.

“There is another crisis today, and in this time of climate crisis it is time to think about making the most of our natural daylight.”
