The director of Inside Out 2 knows people think there are too many Pixar sequels. Why a third film won’t materialize after all

Franchise filmmaking is the name of the game at all studios these days, meaning sequels are often more in demand than original ideas. If you’re Pixar, a studio that might only release one movie a year, even having several sequels in development could mean you’ll only get sequels for years to come. Pixar has a lot of sequels compared to its total production. And after the dizzying success of Inside out 2you have to wonder if Inside out 3 is not that far away.

After a recent period in which Pixar released several original films, it appears that Pixar will be returning to a “franchise mode” that will center on sequels. Most of the upcoming Pixar films we know of are sequels, and given their success Inside out 2it certainly seems like sequels are successful. Inside out 2 director Kelsey Mann was asked by Empire about the possibility of Inside out 3 and while he says nothing is planned at the moment, he’s also very honest that it’s entirely possible. Mann explained…

People are quite open. They are open to another film. They want to make sure we do it right. But people are excited when they see Riley’s life – her whole life. They want to see Riley grow up. … We haven’t had any conversations. Mainly because the movie came out and I took a break. But there are so many great ideas that we couldn’t fit into this film or the original. I really hope these ideas find a home someday.
