The governors of Texas and Oklahoma bet on BBQ and beer at Red River Showdown

The governors of Texas and Oklahoma have entered into a friendly bet between the University of Texas Longhorns and the University of Oklahoma Sooners ahead of the annual Red River Showdown.

Texas Governor Greg Abbott initiated the betting on X, offering to bet Railhead BBQ and Lone Star beer if the Longhorns lose.

Oklahoma Governor Kevin Stitt immediately accepted the challenge and responded with a video message from the Oklahoma State Capitol. “I come to you from the capital of the great state of Oklahoma,” Stitt said. “And just to remind you that we pranked you last year.”

Stitt, with a 4-1 record against the “short horns”, countered Abbott’s offer with a bet of Oklahoma steaks and Oklahoma craft beer. He also reminded Abbott that the Texas barbecue from last year’s bet “was delicious.”

The Governors’ bet adds to the long-standing rivalry between the two football programs, which dates back to the early 20th century. This year’s match is scheduled for Saturday in Dallas, a neutral site where the match has been held since 1928.

Stitt closed his video message with a confident “Boomer Sooner, Horns down.”
