The live-action Minecraft movie trailer will haunt my dreams forever

Have you heard? There is a live-action Minecraft movie coming next year. Starring Jack Black, Jason Momoa, Jennifer Coolidge, and Emma Myers, a pretty solid cast! The first trailer is out now and will haunt my dreams until my dying breath.

Warner Bros. Pictures has released a teaser trailer for its latest video game adaptation, and it’s definitely something. There’s a lot to talk about here, but we highly recommend checking it out first. We’ve embedded the video below, but again, this will probably haunt me and you too. You’ve been warned.

Okay, now that you’ve seen it, let’s start with the obvious. What the hell is up with Jason Momoa’s bangs? Why are they like this? It’s hard to tell if this is a choice on Momoa’s part or if the hair and makeup department is just living their best lives, but it’s a look that could best be described as “mid-2010s rom-com actress,” and it’s both gorgeous and incredibly distracting.

Minecraft Steve by Jack Black is just Jack Black being himself, hanging out in the Minecraft world, and it’s hard to argue with that creative direction. It’s worked in a hundred other movies, and it seems like it’s going to work here, too. The rest of the cast seems to be leaning into how silly it all is, too, and Wednesday’s Emma Myers is doing a great job. So far, so good.

But then the creatures. My goodness, the creatures. That sheep in the opening is an abomination, the piglins are unnecessarily meaty, the creeper is… fine, I guess, and the llama, while the most normal of the bunch, is still terrifying with his creepy square eyes.

To say the least, the world looks absolutely fantastic, with real props supplemented by plenty of CGI to make it feel close enough to a Minecraft world. Some things look a tiny bit too real, but given the mood of the film, that can certainly be overlooked – it feels like Minecraft, maybe with a high-res, realistic texture pack slapped on top.

A Minecraft movie – as the official title goes – is coming out in the US on April 4, 2024.
