The Los Angeles Clippers star is out indefinitely with right knee inflammation: report

The Los Angeles Clippers start the regular season without their star player.

Kawhi Leonard will miss indefinitely as he deals with inflammation in his right knee, according to Shams Charania of ESPN. Leonard is not expected to play when the Clippers open their regular season with a game against the Phoenix Suns on Oct. 23.

Leonard and the Clippers are working on a rehabilitation program in an effort to ensure long-term durability and health for the two-time NBA Finals MVP. Leonard has missed the entire preseason and has not engaged in any activity involving contact on the field.

The 33-year-old attacker has been struggling with problems with his right knee since last season. At the end of March he suffered from inflammation in the knee, which forced him to miss the last eight games of the regular season. He then missed four of six games during the Clippers’ first-round playoff loss to the Dallas Mavericks.

Leonard committed to play for Team USA at the 2024 Olympics in Paris over the summer, but was sent home after a handful of practices.

Leonard suffered a partial tear of the ACL in the knee during the 2021 playoffs and missed the entire 2021-2022 season while recovering. He played in 52 regular season games in 2022-23 before tearing his right meniscus during the playoffs. Last season, he played in 68 regular-season games – his most since the 2016-17 season – before knee problems resurfaced.
