The New England forecast calls for sunny skies after the rain clears

A weak weather system brought limited rainfall overnight and while anything is welcome at this point, we need a lot more rain to alleviate the drought in New England. Part of Boston received 0.1 inch of rain, while the New Haven suburb of Northford, Conn., recorded 0.40 inches of rain.

Other top precipitation totals include:

South Kingstown — 0.38 inches

Mystic — 0.39 inches

Lexington – 0.31 inches

If you planted or transplanted this fall, it is important to water about once a week until rainfall returns to normal.

Temperatures today will be the mildest of the week and we will have fairly cool weather on Wednesday and Thursday when it will be below average.

High pressure builds up in the region during the working week. We will feel a strengthening flow of colder air on Wednesday and Thursday before a moderating trend takes place towards the end of the week.

If you’re wondering when this dry pattern might finally end, there are still no reliable signs of significant rainfall on the horizon. When we get into these patterns, it can often be very difficult to break them. In the same way that we saw copious amounts of rain last fall and winter and it seemed like it would never stop, we have now gone to the other extreme.

Things have a way of balancing themselves out, and the question forecasters will be wondering about is: If we get into regular precipitation, will we go to the other extreme again? Continue to enjoy the dry weather for now, as it will eventually change.

Southern New England: There will be clearing skies with temperatures in the 60s and a bit of a breeze in the afternoon.

Western Mass: This morning the sky will clear and sunny spells will appear. Temperatures will be in the low 60s.

Cape and Islands: Any early showers will end with clear skies in the afternoon and temperatures in the low 60s.

Northern New England: Any morning showers will come to an end with clear spells. Temperatures will be in the 50s to near 60 degrees.
