The number 1 in the 2026 football season, Jahkeem Stewart, is going to transfer

Five-star defensive end Jahkeem Stewart, ESPN’s top prospect for the class of 2026, is no longer at St. Augustine High School in New Orleans, ESPN confirmed Friday afternoon, opening the door for a huge in-season transfer and a potential reclassification into the class of 2025.

Stewart, the 6-foot-4, 275-pound high school senior, confirmed his departure from St. Augustine, telling ESPN that he plans to immediately join a new program, considering schools inside and outside of Louisiana, with the hope of enrolling as early as Monday. The decision comes as Stewart is considering re-enrolling for the class of 2025, which opens up the possibility that he could finish his high school career this fall and land on a college campus as early as January.

“St. Augustine has helped me become a much better man than I was when I started there — it’s taught me a lot,” Stewart said. “My plan is to find a school that I really want to help me with my decision — a place that will improve me and help me make the decision that I’m trying to make.”

Stewart, an elite defensive line prospect, had offers from a slate of power conference programs even before his freshman season at St. Augustine, where he emerged as an overwhelming pass-rushing force from the edge and interior. Stewart finished with 85 total tackles (33 for loss) and 20 sacks in his junior season last fall and played in the program’s season opener last Friday.

If Stewart decides to reclassify this fall, he will immediately become ESPN’s top uncommitted prospect in the 2025 cycle. Stewart released his top 15 schools earlier this year in a list packed with SEC and Big 10 programs, along with Miami, Florida State and Colorado.

Stewart’s summer visit list included trips to Ohio State, LSU, Oregon, Texas and Auburn, and he was in Las Vegas in Week 1 for the neutral site opener between USC and LSU. Stewart does not plan to make any campus visits in Week 2.

“We just want to chill this weekend, maybe find a school,” he said. “I should go to school somewhere on Monday or Tuesday.”
