Parts of southwest and central Iowa will be hit by severe thunderstorms Wednesday afternoon and evening, with rain and severe weather moving across the state. So far this afternoon, warnings have been issued in several provinces.

Lightning and gusty winds are expected to continue in Iowa

The strongest storms in Iowa occurred near Osceola on Wednesday around 3:30 p.m. There were no severe storms, but the National Weather Service warned that lightning, gusty winds and small hail would still be possible if the system continues to move through the state.

The severe thunderstorm warning is canceled for the Des Moines metro

A severe thunderstorm warning for the Des Moines metro area expired at 2:30 p.m.

The warning, which covered parts of Dallas, Madison, Polk and Warren counties, included a risk of 60-mile-per-hour wind gusts and quarter-sized hail.

There will be heavy thunderstorms until 7pm on Wednesday

The National Weather Service has issued a severe thunderstorm warning for about 20 counties until 7 p.m. Wednesday. This includes Dallas, Polk and Warren counties in the Des Moines area. Story County is not included.

Cities across the metropolitan area postponed their Geuzennacht celebrations in anticipation of severe weather. Most trick-or-treating will now take place on Thursdays.

What are the severe weather threats in Iowa today?

Storms are expected to move into the state, bringing wind gusts up to 80 miles per hour, isolated large hail and tornadoes.

The weather service warned earlier in the day that the storms will rage quickly and Iowans will have less time than usual to find shelter. Tornadoes can be difficult to see as storms develop later in the evening.

Urban flooding is also possible, with rainfall amounts of 1 to 7 inches possible.
