A wildfire near Route 10 and Eisenhower Parkway in Livingston that started Saturday and continued to burn Sunday has now covered about 140 acres, officials said.

Firefighters deployed a helicopter that can drop 350 liters of water.

The fire is threatening ten buildings and is 60% contained, according to the New Jersey Forest Fire Service. When fully contained, the fire is expected to cover approximately 190 hectares. Up to 48 structures had previously been threatened.

The fire has caused multiple road closures in the area, including Naylon and Dorsa Avenues and Industrial Parkway. Route 10 and Eisenhower Parkway have reopened in both directions.

The Forest Fire Service is assisting the Livingston Fire Department with 15 engines and 45 firefighters. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Smoke from the fire could be seen for miles Saturday afternoon by motorists traveling east on Route 80 and Route 280.

The fire danger level is extreme on Sunday

The National Weather Service issued a warning on Sunday of an increased risk of wildfires. It says relative humidity levels will drop to 20 to 30 percent across much of the area Sunday afternoon, with temperatures in the upper 50s to low 60s and plenty of sunshine.

“Vegetation remains very dry and could potentially become fuel for fires,” the consultancy said. “These conditions will encourage the spread of any fires, which could quickly become difficult to control.”

The fire danger level for northern and central New Jersey is considered extreme on Sunday, according to the state Forest Fire Department’s “Fire Danger Dashboard,” and very high for the southern part of the state.

Stage 3 fire restrictions remain in effect for New Jersey. This means that campers are prohibited from starting a fire unless it is in an elevated stove using only propane, natural gas, or electricity. Charcoal fires of any kind are prohibited. No agricultural burning is permitted.
