There will be three new ‘Arcane’ shows, one character confirmed

To answer a question some still have after Arcane season 2’s seemingly decisive finale: no, there won’t be a season 3. There was never any intention for there to be. Instead, we’ve been hearing for a while that other League of Legends-based shows are in development, and now, in the wake of that finale, we have more information.

This has been revealed by mysterious co-creator Christian Linke three shows are in development, series in three regions: Noxus, Ionia and Demacia. One of these shows, which he won’t say which one, has been in development for a year, which means we can hopefully see it in, say, two years instead of three, shorter than the gap between Arcane’s two seasons. Considering that all three are in production and not just in concept form, that’s a good indication that they will all see the light of day at some point.

(Update: Riot’s Marc Merrill clarified that Linke said they were “exploring three regions”, not three separate shows. But then he says they’re “exploring a bunch of different shows,” so it’s not clear if that’s three or more).

I suspect that given how heavily Noxus was featured in Arcane, this could be the first, but we don’t know for sure. If you’re looking for a potential cast list, here are some of the better-known League heroes from each of these regions:

NOXUS:

  • Darius
  • Draven
  • Riven
  • Katarina
  • Cassiopeia
  • Swan
  • LeBlanc
  • Talon
  • Zion
  • Samira
  • Vladimir
  • Rel

IONIA:

  • Ahri
  • Akali
  • Ireland
  • Karma
  • Know
  • Lee Sin
  • Master Yi
  • Shen
  • Zed
  • Yasuo
  • Yes
  • Jhin
  • Sett
  • Syndra
  • Lillia
  • Xayah
  • Rakan

DEMACIA:

  • Yarn
  • Lux
  • Jarvan IV
  • Fiora
  • Xin Zhao
  • Vayne
  • Quinn
  • Shyvana
  • Sonja
  • Poppy
  • Sylas
  • Kayle

One of the reasons I think Noxus is first on the table is because there was a clear nod to Swain at the end of the finale, as we see his raven make a cameo appearance. And again, a lot of this story was based on Noxus forces with Ambessa in Piltover.

But you can see here what Riot’s vision is: that it has a huge range of characters and stories to draw from. But even though most League fans love Arcane, there are complaints that the events of the show have rewritten a lot of existing lore about Piltover and its main characters, which would undoubtedly be the case for other regions. But I suspect Riot might not care about this, because they’ve now created one of the best animated media properties of all time, and storytelling is a priority.

It probably won’t be until 2026 or 2027 before we see a new Arcane series. I wonder how this will all work with Fortiche, the French animation studio that brought Arcane to this level of unprecedented beauty, as they might four shows to work on, and I don’t think anyone wants to see it not-Fortiche animation, given what Arcane has given us so far. Hopefully they can handle it.
