    These 200 schools received BrucePac meat and poultry in listeria memory

    The U.S. Department of Agriculture has released a preliminary list of schools that have received products included in the £11.8 million BrucePac listeria recall.

    Initially reported without a product list on Oct. 9 as a recall for 9,986,245 pounds of meat and poultry due to possible listeria contamination, the number increased by another 1,779,040 pounds on Wednesday, increasing the weight to a total of 11.8 million pounds. The additional £1.7 million was reportedly sent to schools, although no list was offered at the time of announcement.

    On Thursday evening, the USDA’s Food and Safety Inspection Service (FSIS) updated the notice with a preliminary list of approximately 200 schools to which recalled products have been distributed. The products going to these schools were not part of USDA’s National School Lunch and Breakfast Programs, the release said.

    The agency is also consistently expanding a list of products and product labels affected by the recall, which as of Friday is 348 pages long.

    Here is the latest list of U.S. schools that have received recalled food, according to FSIS data.

    What types of products are being recalled?

    Sandwiches, wraps and salads are the main prepared foods affected by the recall. Frozen meals containing chicken products, ranging from pasta and burritos to bowls and family meals, are also affected.

    The prepared meat and poultry items were produced from May 31, 2024 to October 8, 2024. The products were shipped to other facilities and distributors nationwide and then distributed to restaurants, schools and institutions.

    The USDA continues to update the list of affected products and suggests checking back regularly at fsis.usda.gov/recalls.

    What is listeriosis or listeria poisoning?

    Listeriosis, or listeria poisoning, is a foodborne bacterial infection usually caused by the bacterium Listeria monocytogenes. It is considered a serious condition and can be dangerous or life-threatening, especially for older adults, people with weak immune systems, and pregnant people.

    It can take weeks for the signs and symptoms of listeriosis to appear after consumption. Individuals in the high-risk categories who experience flu-like symptoms within two months of eating contaminated food should seek medical care and tell the healthcare provider about eating the contaminated food, the USDA says.
